Nature & scenery

  • Saraki Cape (サラキ岬), 字亀川, 10 minutes by car from the station69. A monument of the Kanrin Maru at about one-fifth scale carries a poem by a descendant of crew member Hamaguchi Okiemon48. A memorial stone to the ship stands at the tip of the cape69. The tulips were first sent by the then head of a Netherlands–Hokkaido association, because the ship was built in the Netherlands. They bloom from late April to mid-May18.
  • Yakushiyama and Hagiyama (薬師山・萩山), 5 minutes' walk from the station. Wood-chip trails pass the Thirty-Three Kannon statues and the "Sanbon-sugi" at the summit, three trees whose roots are said to have joined. Despite the name, they are Japanese yews (onko), not cedars46. The moss phlox on Yakushiyama is being replanted after frost and animal damage and cannot be seen at present47.
  • Satsukari Ippon-sugi and Jizō Hall (札苅一本杉・地蔵堂): a cedar over 100 years old beside a Jizō prayed to for children and protection from fire, 20 minutes by car from the station70.

Name origin

The name comes from the Ainu name of the Kikonai River (木古内川). There are two theories1127:

  • Rironai (リロナイ), from rir-o-nay, "the river the tide flows into" (wave–enter–river). The river has a large tidal range, and at high tide seawater runs back upstream. Wikipedia cites this reading from the Hokkaido Government's list of Ainu place names28.
  • Rikonai (リコナイ), "a source that rises high."

The town notes that "Rikonai" does not appear in any document before the Meiji era, so it treats Rironai as the more likely origin. The present name is said to date from the Kan'ei era (1624–1643), when the Matsumae domain surveyed its lands27. A 1644 provincial map shows the place as "Kiku-nai" (キク内) inside the Wajin-settled zone6.

District names have Ainu roots too. Satsukari (札苅) is said to come from shiraddo-kari, "rocky shore." Izumisawa (泉沢) was once called Shushuboke, "in the shade of the willows." One theory derives Kamaya (釜谷) from Kamayabetsu, "river with a flat rock bed"27.

History

  • Prehistory: The Shinmichi 4 Site (新道4遺跡) on the lower Kikonai River held a microblade workshop from about 14,000 years ago. People lived there through almost the whole Jōmon period29. The Satsukari Site's main layer is a Final Jōmon (Kamegaoka culture) village with dwellings, 96 grave pits and small clay figurines24. The Ōkamaya 3 Site produced a painted basketry-lacquer vessel (彩文籃胎漆器), only the fourth basketry-lacquer find in Hokkaido30. The town counts 61 archaeological sites31.
  • 1443: The first Wajin are recorded as arriving. The town's table prints "1433" next to the era name Kakitsu 3, but Kakitsu 3 is 1443, the year the section heading uses6.
  • c. 1450–1457: Satō Suenori built Nakano-date (中野館), one of the Twelve Forts of Donan32. It was destroyed in Koshamain's War in 14576.
  • 1625–1666: Samegawa Shrine (佐女川神社) was founded, by one account in 1625. The itinerant monk Enkū passed through around 1666 and left carved statues6.
  • 1786–1800: A shogunate survey found just under 50 households and about 200 people. The area came under direct shogunate rule in 1799, and surveyor Inō Tadataka stayed a night in 18006.
  • 1831: The Misogi rite began13.
  • 1858–1859: Ōtomo Kametarō was put in charge of land clearance. Twenty-four households from Echigo (now Niigata) opened up Nakano and Uriya6.
  • 1868–1869 (Hakodate War): Hijikata Toshizō's column set up headquarters in Kikonai on its way to Matsumae. In April 1869 the two battles of Kikonai-guchi (木古内口の戦い) were fought here. Ōtori Keisuke is said to have directed the former shogunate army from Yakushiyama33.
  • 1871, 20th day of the 9th month (old calendar): The Kanrin Maru ran aground off Saraki Cape. It was carrying retainers of the Katakura family of Shiroishi (Sendai domain) to Otaru. The tourism association counts 112 households and 401 people34, but the town's history table says 1046. Izumisawa villagers rescued them. One passenger died a few days later, and the ship broke up and sank34.
  • 1885–1886: 105 households of former Shōnai-domain samurai from Tsuruoka (Yamagata) settled in Tsuruoka, Nakano, Uriya, Ōkawa and Tatekawa735.
  • 1902–1942: The village formed in 1902 and suffered a great fire in 19038. The railway reached Kamiiso in 1930, Esashi in 1936 and Shiriuchi in 1937. In 1933 Meiji Seika took over the local condensed-milk company. Kikonai became a town in 19429.
  • 1949 and 1957: Great fires destroyed 216 and 167 houses36.
  • 1988: The Matsumae Line closed and the Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line through the Seikan Tunnel opened. Kikonai became "the first station on the northern land"36.
  • 1990–2011: Kikonai was designated a depopulated area in 1990. The 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake damaged the town. Tulips first bloomed at Saraki Cape in 2002. Shinkansen construction began in 200537.
  • 2014–2016: The Kikonai–Esashi section of the Esashi Line closed in May 201438. The Michi-no-Eki opened on 13 January 201620. On 26 March 2016 the Hokkaido Shinkansen opened39 and the Dōnan Isaribi Railway took over the coastal line to Goryōkaku40.
  • 2021–2026: On 2 November 2021 Kikonai recorded 221.0 mm of rain in a day and 136.5 mm in one hour, both station records41. Kikonai IC opened on 26 March 202242. The Misogi rite became a Hokkaido cultural property in November 20231443. Since 2024 the town has co-hosted IRONMAN Japan Minami-Hokkaido44.

Geography & climate

Kikonai lies in the southwest of the Oshima Peninsula and faces the Tsugaru Strait to the south. Apart from a small plain around the town center, the land is mountains and hills. Wikipedia lists Katsuradake (桂岳, 734 m) as its main mountain10. About 90% of the town is forest, and its forestry produces Dōnan cedar (道南杉)22. National forest makes up about 55% of the forest land45.

The Kikonai River (二級河川) is about 13.6 km long and drains 119.7 km², all inside the town. It flows gently and is tidal near its mouth28. Other rivers include the Samegawa (佐女川), Ōkamaya and Nakano10. Behind the town center rise Yakushiyama (薬師山) and Hagiyama (萩山). The town gives Yakushiyama's height as 72.9 m and the tourism association as about 80 m. On clear days its summit lookout faces the Tsugaru and Shimokita peninsulas4647. From Saraki Cape you can see Mt. Hakodate, the Shimokita Peninsula and Cape Yagoshi48.

Climate (JMA Kikonai AMeDAS, 1991–2020 normals)49:

  • Annual mean 8.9 °C. January averages −2.3 °C and August 21.6 °C.

The Misogi rite. According to legend, in 1831 the shrine keeper was told in a dream to purify the deity. He broke the ice on the Samegawa and bathed in it, then saw a woman in white riding a great shark at the river mouth. Good catches and harvests followed13. The men, called gyōshūsha (行修者), train to the Omanishikugida drums, named for herring shoals arriving at Ōma beach. Each serves four years, moving up from Benzaiten to Yama-no-Kami, Inari and finally Bettō, the image of the main deity, Tamayori-hime. Anyone splashed is said to be blessed, and the rite ends with Matsumae Kagura13. The sacred images are said to be the work of Enkū13. The rite was designated a Hokkaido Intangible Folk Cultural Property on 17 November 2023 as "Samegawa Shrine Kanchū Misogi"14. The certificate was presented at the 194th festival in January 202443.

Enkū Buddhas. Three statues carved by Enkū around 1666 survive at Samegawa, Nishino and Kosen shrines. A 1965 Hokkaido Board of Education survey called them masterpieces among those in Hokkaido. They are the shrines' sacred images and are almost never shown66.

Kikonai Bon Odori (木古内盆踊り) is danced to a big drum alone, a style the town traces to Tsugaru across the strait. Older residents once danced every night from 13 to 20 August67.

Kikonai no Bō (木古内の坊) tells of Kawamata Tomokichi, a poor boy born early in the Meiji era who, despite an eye disease like his blind father's, sold matchwood to support the family. Residents raised a statue of him in 2006; it stands with the Tsugaru Strait at its back68.

Ainu heritage

Few Ainu sites are documented in Kikonai, but several traces remain:

  • The town's name comes from Ainu, and so do some district names (Satsukari, and Izumisawa's old name Shushuboke)2728.
  • Koshamain's War of 1457, a major Ainu uprising, destroyed the Wajin fort Nakano-date here6.
  • A grave from the early-modern Ainu period was found at the Satsukari Site, alongside the Jōmon remains24.
  • A folk song, Haoi Ondo (ハオイ音頭), is said to have been sung when older residents fished alongside Ainu people. Its verses name Kamaya, Izumisawa, Satsukari and Kikonai67.

No Ainu cultural facility or living Ainu tradition in the town was found.

Sister & friendship cities

  • Tsuruoka, Yamagata (山形県鶴岡市): sister city since 27 April 1989. The link began with the Shōnai-domain samurai who settled here in 1885–86. The two towns' elementary schools became sister schools in 1964. Misogi-no-Mai sake is brewed in Tsuruoka35.
  • Edogawa Ward, Tokyo (東京都江戸川区): an exchange city (交流都市). Ties grew from an April 2016 agreement between Edogawa and the Oshima association of towns and villages, and from Edogawa's friendship with Tsuruoka98.
  • Sotogahama, Aomori (青森県外ヶ浜町): Kikonai signed a friendship agreement with the former Kanita Town (蟹田町) in 198836. Wikipedia dates it to 31 March 198810. The town's current sister-city page lists only Tsuruoka and Edogawa99.
  • International: none found.

Notable people

  • Yoshida Issui (吉田一穂, 1898–1973): poet, critic and children's author, born to a fishing family in Kamaya100.
  • Minato Kōichi (港浩一, b. 1952): television producer and former president of Fuji Television, born in Kikonai101.
  • Misogidori Eiji (禊鳳英二, b. 1943): sumo wrestler from Kikonai, whose highest rank was maegashira 2 (1966)102.
