Eniwa 恵庭市

えにわし

Eniwa is a commuter city of about 70,000 people halfway between Sapporo and New Chitose Airport.12 It calls itself a "garden city": residents open their private gardens to visitors, local nurseries grow most of the flowers planted in Sapporo's Odori Park, and a flower park has grown up around its roadside station.345 Eniwa is also where Sapporo Classic beer is brewed and where 3,000-year-old Jōmon lacquer ornaments were found in a group burial.67

Known for

  • Garden city (ガーデンシティえにわ): After a study visit to Christchurch, New Zealand, the first Megumino (恵み野) Flower Gardening Contest was held in summer 1991. Megumino's open gardens gradually made Eniwa known across Japan as a "flower town," and visitors and study tours followed.3 Megumino won the national "Beautiful Townscape Grand Prize" (美しいまちなみ大賞) in 2004.16 The city's flower-and-greenery work won the Prime Minister's Prize at the 40th Green City Awards (緑の都市賞) in 2020.17
  • Flower seedlings: Eniwa is one of Hokkaido's leading producers of bedding plants. Most of the flowers in Sapporo's Odori Park flowerbeds come from Eniwa.4
  • Hana Road Eniwa and Hanafuru: The roadside station on National Route 36 gets more than a million visitors a year. Next to it is the Hanafuru (はなふる) flower park, with seven themed gardens, a farm stand, a hotel and an RV park.185
  • Sapporo Classic: Sapporo Breweries' Hokkaido Brewery in Eniwa is the only place that brews Sapporo Classic, a Hokkaido-only all-malt lager.6
  • Karinba site (カリンバ遺跡): Group graves from about 3,000 years ago held many red-lacquered combs, bracelets and belts. The site became a National Historic Site in 2005, and the finds became Important Cultural Properties in 2006.7
  • Eniwa Gorge (恵庭渓谷): The Sandan, Rarumanai and Hakusen waterfalls and Lake Eniwa are on the road towards Lake Shikotsu. Autumn colors are best in early to mid-October.1920
  • Ebisu pumpkin (えびすかぼちゃ): Eniwa was among the first places in Hokkaido to grow this kabocha variety. It was sold to the Kansai region as "Eniwa no Ebisu."8
  • Reading town: In December 2000 Eniwa became the first municipality in Japan to start the "Bookstart" program, which gives picture books to babies.13 In 2013 it passed an ordinance to promote reading.13

Sights & activities

Nature & scenery

  • Eniwa Gorge waterfalls: From downtown, drive about 18 km (25 minutes) up Hokkaido Road 117 (道道117号恵庭岳公園線). There is no public transport.19
    • Sandan Falls (三段の滝) drops in three white tiers. Legend says Minamoto no Yoshitsune's treasure is buried in the nearby Kumanosawa valley. There is no car park; use the next ones up the road.19
    • Rarumanai Falls (ラルマナイの滝) has a car park for 13 cars and 3 large vehicles.19
    • Hakusen Falls (白扇の滝) is 15 m high and 18 m wide, "like an open white fan." It once ranked sixth among rivers and waterfalls in the Hokkaido 100 Sightseeing Views (北海道観光百景). Its car park holds 12 cars and 2 large vehicles.19
    • The sites open from 29 April and may close because of bears.19
  • Lake Eniwa (えにわ湖) and Sakura Park:
    • At the Free Plaza you can barbecue with a portable grill at the designated charcoal spots. The neighboring Sakura Park has Kurile, Kasumi and red cherry trees.20
    • Both are open 29 April–3 November, 9:00–17:00.20
    • Cherry blossom peaks around 3–12 May and autumn color around 10–20 October.20
    • Black woodpeckers (クマゲラ) and mandarin ducks live around the lake.20
  • Midori no Furusato Forest Park (緑のふるさと森林公園): 37.8 ha of woods with an adventure course and nature trails. Free, open 29 April–3 November.57
  • In town:
    • Baikamo water crowfoot blooms in the Moizari River (茂漁川) channel in July–August.58
    • Karinba Nature Park (カリンバ自然公園) has skunk cabbage next to the historic site.58
    • The Yukanboshi Riverside Sculpture Plaza (ユカンボシ河畔彫刻広場) is closed in winter.58

Onsen

  • Eniwa Onsen La Forêt (恵庭温泉ラ・フォーレ): Enan 4-1. A sodium-chloride hot spring with a large outdoor bath and saunas, open 11:00–23:00.59 The tourism association describes the water as natural "moor" onsen (モール温泉), a type of hot spring colored by plant-derived organic matter, and says it is recognized as Hokkaido Heritage.58 Adult admission rises from ¥500 to ¥550 on 1 October 2026.59
  • Eniwa Onsen Honoka (えにわ温泉ほのか): A day spa with a natural moor onsen and two kinds of hot-stone bath.43

Museums & heritage

  • Eniwa City Museum of Local History: Minami-Shimamatsu 157-2. Free, 9:30–17:00. About 30 minutes on foot from JR Megumino Station, or take the community bus to the Matsuzono-sen stop.52
  • Karinba National Historic Site: Kogane-Chūō 5-chōme, between JR Eniwa Station and Route 36. For now it has only a marker, signboards and flowerbeds. A park with a visitor center is planned.753
  • Sapporo Hokkaido Brewery: Toiso 542-1. The 60-minute "Sapporo Classic Tour" includes two tasting glasses.60
    • Tours start at 10:30, 11:00, 13:30, 14:00 and 15:00. Adults ¥1,000; junior high school students to age 19 ¥500; elementary school age and under free.60
    • Book in advance. The brewery is closed Mondays and Tuesdays (Wednesday and Thursday when those are public holidays).60
    • It will also be closed 5–13 October 2026 for construction.36

Outdoor & seasonal activities

  • Hanafuru Garden Area: Seven themed gardens designed by Murata Shūichi of Takano Landscape Planning, who supervised the project, and 11 other leading Hokkaido gardeners. They include a gravel garden by Ueno Sayuki of Ueno Farm and a kitchen garden by Ecorin Village.61

  • Ecorin Village (えこりん村): An environmental farm park run by the Aleph group, owner of the Bikkuri Donkey restaurant chain.62 Its seasonal facilities opened for 2026 between mid-April (Tomato Forest, 18 April) and early May.63 Attractions:

    • the Welcome Centre
    • Rakudaken (らくだ軒) restaurant
    • the "Tomato Forest" greenhouse, where a single tomato plant set a Guinness World Record as the world's largest in 2013
    • the Sheep Sheep campground and BBQ house
    • a dog run opened on 1 May 20266362

    The garden, ranch and buffet-restaurant areas closed in October 2024.6362

  • Farm and outdoor experiences:

    • Murakami Farm: milking, feeding and ice-cream making.64
    • Yoko Farm: tofu, miso, soba and pizza making, vegetable picking, and "Eniwa Genghis Khan" lamb barbecues.64
    • Horse Garden Muranaka: horse trekking through meadows and along the riverbank.64
    • Forest Adventure Eniwa: a forest adventure course with a green season (mid-April to late November) and a winter season (early December to mid-April).64

  • Other outdoor facilities: The Kashiwagi district recreation area has a campground with a Japanese garden.58

Food experiences

  • Kanona (かのな): About 70 growers sell around 300 kinds of vegetables here. On weekends people line up before opening, and about 2,000 visit a day.5
  • Brewery restaurant: Walhalla serves beer straight from the brewery with Genghis Khan lamb.36
  • Local cafés and bakeries: The tourism association recommends Peacock (ピーコック), a bakery open from early morning; Cake House Pomme (ケーキハウス ポム); and Kisoba Gorō's (きそば五郎) katsu-curry soba.40

Roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki)

Hana Road Eniwa (道の駅花ロードえにわ)

  • Location: Minami-Shimamatsu 817-18 (南島松817番地18), on National Route 36 where it crosses the salmon-run Izari River. The site calls itself a "road-and-river station" (道と川の駅), and about 38,000 vehicles a day pass on Route 36.1618 It sits between Megumino and Eniwa, about 30 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport and 50 minutes from JR Sapporo Station. On foot it is about 20 minutes from JR Megumino Station and 35 minutes from JR Eniwa Station. The Eniwa community bus stops at "Hanafuru."18
  • Hours: as of September 2026 — check before visiting.1618
    • April–October: 9:00–18:00. November–March: 9:00–17:00.
    • Food last orders are 30 minutes before closing.
    • Closed 31 December–2 January.
    • The station opened at 8:00 on weekends and holidays in July–August 2026, on 11 and 13–16 August (Obon), and during Golden Week (with limited service before 9:00).
    • Kanona hours differ: 9:00–17:00 from April to October, 9:00–16:30 in November, and 10:00–16:00 from December to March. It closes 22 December–14 January.5 The city's page gives slightly different seasonal hours.38
  • Shops & products:
    • "Hana Road GIFT" sells about 4,000 kinds of souvenirs, including sweets made from Eniwa produce and one of Hokkaido's larger ranges of Shima-enaga (long-tailed tit) goods.18
    • Ra-no sells Eniwa-made natural soap and household goods.16
    • Kanona, next door, is a farm stand selling produce from about 70 growers.5
    • In September 2026 the shop launched Eniwa kinako twists (えにわきなこねじり).16
  • Food:
    • Skillet Curry Konayuki Tonton (スキレットカレーこな雪とんとん) serves curry and roast pork from Eniwa free-range pork in cast-iron skillets. The "Korokoro curry" is its signature, and there is a limited "sheep moon-viewing keema curry" in autumn 2026.16
    • The Enipan (えにパン) bakery bakes about 40 kinds of bread every morning. Favorites are pumpkin-pudding bread, apple bread and sausage bread made with Konayuki Tonton pork.18
    • Goasis sells tea, isobe-mochi and daifuku made with Eniwa glutinous rice.16
    • Soft serve and drinks are sold in the station.18 Elsewhere in Hanafuru there are a Starbucks, Eniwa Omusubi Ebisu (rice balls and strawberry soft serve, 8:00–17:00) and a Fairfield by Marriott hotel.5
  • Facilities:
    • Parking: the Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki site lists 402 car spaces and 25 for large vehicles, which appears to include the Hanafuru car parks. The station's own site lists 151 car, 20 large-vehicle and 4 accessible/pregnancy spaces, plus other nearby parking.1618
    • Toilets: accessible toilets with an ostomate facility, which is not available 24 hours.16
    • Other: nursing room, kids' space, credit and cashless payment, and wheelchair loan.1618
    • EV charging: a 24-hour quick charger in Hanafuru car park C costs ¥500 per session of about 30 minutes, cash only (2021 terms).65 The charger broke down and is expected to be out of service from 18 September to 30 November 2026.66
    • Wi-Fi works across all of Hanafuru.5
    • RV park: the "RV Park Hana Road Eniwa" has 19 lots, 10 for medium vehicles and 9 for large, bookable online only.67
      • Price: ¥3,000 a night from April 2026.
      • Check-in 12:30–16:45; check-out by 10:00.
      • Free showers, a kitchen lounge and 24-hour toilets. Power is extra (¥500).
      • Pets are allowed.
    • Playground: the "Riria" (りりあ) children's park has indoor and outdoor areas, 9:30–16:30 (last entry 15:20).568
    • Hotel: Fairfield by Marriott Hokkaido Eniwa (102 rooms) opened in May 2022.69

      • The Eniwa Tourist Information Center (恵庭観光案内所), in the Hanafuru Center House, is open 9:00–17:00.70
      • Hana Road Eniwa is a JNTO-certified foreign visitor information partner.71
      • Touch-screen signage in the station works in five languages.71

    • Registered as a Michi-no-Eki in August 2005: the Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki site gives 10 August 2005 (No. 87), and the city chronicle gives 19 August.1613
    • Opened on 1 July 2006 and renovated on 12 March 2020. It passed 10 million visitors in 2016.13

Getting there & around

  • Rail: The JR Chitose Line has four stations in Eniwa: Shimamatsu (島松), Megumino (恵み野), Eniwa (恵庭) and Sapporo Beer Teien (サッポロビール庭園).8 Rapid Airport trains have stopped at Eniwa since 16 March 2002.13 Eniwa Station is about 25 minutes from Sapporo and 13 minutes from New Chitose Airport.72 For the brewery, get off at Sapporo Beer Teien Station and walk about 10 minutes. Rapid Airport trains do not stop there, so change to a local train at Eniwa (from Sapporo) or Chitose (from the airport). Some local trains also skip it.73
  • Bus: Hokkaido Chūō Bus's Sapporo–Chitose route stops at "Sapporo Beer Hokkaido Kōjō-mae."73 Expressway buses run by Chūō Bus, Hokuto Kōtsū and Dōnan Bus use the Eniwa bus stop at Eniwa IC.8 The city's Eniwa Community Bus (えにわコミュニティバス, called "eco-bus") links the neighborhoods, Hanafuru and the museum.1852
  • Road:
    • The Dō-ō Expressway has an interchange at Eniwa IC. The Dōtō Expressway branches off at the Chitose-Eniwa Junction.8
    • National Route 36 runs through the city. National Route 453 crosses the western mountains, linking Lake Shikotsu with Sapporo's Makomanai area.819
    • Driving to the brewery on Route 36 takes about 50 minutes from central Sapporo and 30 minutes from New Chitose Airport.73
  • Air: New Chitose Airport is about 15 km away.35
  • Eniwa Gorge: Take Road 117 from downtown, about 18 km. From Route 453 between Sapporo and Lake Shikotsu, turn onto Road 117 and drive about 6 km.19

Practical tips

  • When to go:
    • Early May for cherry blossoms at Sakura Park.20
    • Late June for Garden Festa Eniwa. The open gardens are best from late June to late August.443
    • Early August for the fireworks and YOSAKOI festivals.4647
    • 10–20 October for autumn colors in the gorge. Roads and car parks there are very crowded then.2019
    • February for the candle nights.43
  • Open-garden manners: The gardens are private homes. Get the Megumino Flower Map (at Hana Road Eniwa, stations and the city hall) and follow its rules. The city warns that visitors' cars parked in front of neighbors' homes cause problems.3
  • Brown bears:
    • A bear was seen near Sandan Falls in September 2025.19
    • Midori no Furusato Forest Park was closed 16–23 September 2026 after a camera recorded a bear. It may close again.57
    • Check the city pages and the Higumap (ひぐまっぷ) sightings map before walking in the gorge. Avoid dusk and take your rubbish home.57
  • Seasonal closures: The Lake Eniwa facilities and Midori no Furusato Forest Park are open only from 29 April to 3 November, and the waterfall parks open from 29 April. Check road conditions on Road 117 before driving.205719
  • Winter: Nights below −20 °C are possible; the record is −26.9 °C. Snow can be deep; Shimamatsu had 154 cm in February 2022. Drive with winter tires and allow extra time.32
  • Events at Hanafuru: Organizers ask visitors to use the Hanafuru car park by the Center House, not the Michi-no-Eki car park on Route 36.47
  • Brewery: Drivers cannot taste beer. Soft drinks are provided instead.73

Area 294.65 km². The Geospatial Information Authority lists this as a reference value, because part of the boundary with Chitose around Mount Eniwa has never been settled.1011 The city spans 34 km east–west and 23 km north–south.1
Density About 238 people/km² (70,031 residents). The city's yearbook gives 239.1/km² for September 2024.12 Most people live on the flat land in the east. The mountain district of Banjiri (盤尻) covers 159.4 km² but has almost no residents.12
Municipal history Izari (漁村) and Shimamatsu (島松村) got their own village office, separate from Chitose, on 15 July 1897. The two villages merged as Eniwa Village (恵庭村) in 1906. Eniwa became a town on 1 April 1951 and a city on 1 November 1970, with 34,500 people.1 In 1943 part of Shimamatsu went to Hiroshima Village (now Kitahiroshima). In 1961 Eniwa took in part of Hiroshima Town.12
Neighboring municipalities Sapporo (Minami and Kiyota wards), Kitahiroshima and Chitose in Ishikari; Naganuma in Sorachi.8
Symbols Tree: Japanese yew (イチイ, called オンコ locally). Flower: lily of the valley (スズラン). Bird: common kingfisher (カワセミ).1 The tree and flower were chosen in 1973 and the bird on 24 September 1996.13 The emblem was adopted on 1 September 1961. Its two linked outlines stand for the Izari and Shimamatsu rivers, and its two rings (輪, wa) are a pun on niwa (庭, "garden").1
Mascot No official city mascot was found on the city website. The Eniwa Chamber of Commerce's website has a page for a character called Ebisu-kun (えびすくん).14 English Wikipedia says Ebisu-kun is an ogre born from a pumpkin, and also lists Karin-chan (かりんちゃん) and Eniwan (えにわん) as mascots (unverified).15

Name origin
  • The city says "Eniwa" comes from the Ainu e-en-iwa (エエンイワ), "the sharply pointed mountain." The name refers to Mount Eniwa (恵庭岳, 1,320 m), which rises above the city to the west.111 Japanese Wikipedia, citing the Hokkaido Government's list of Ainu place names, breaks it down as e (head) + en (pointed) + iwa (mountain).8 No competing etymology was found in the sources consulted.
  • The kanji 恵庭 mean "blessing" and "garden." The name was first used for a municipality in 1906, when Izari and Shimamatsu villages merged as Eniwa Village.1
  • Many other local names are Ainu too:
    • The Izari River (漁川) comes from ichan, "a place where salmon and trout spawn."21
    • Its tributary the Ichankoppe (イチャンコッペ) is read as either "char river" or "river that has spawning grounds."21
    • The city translates Rarumanai (ラルマナイ) as "waterless stream." Another reading is "a stream with sheer banks that falls as waterfalls."19
    • Shimamatsu is linked to the Edo-period trading post "Shumamappu" (シュママップ場所), from Ainu Shuma-o-mappu.15

History
  • Jōmon to Satsumon: People first lived in Eniwa about 7,000 years ago, in the early Jōmon period.2223 At the Karinba site, dug from 1999, archaeologists found graves from about 3,000 years ago. Four large ones held two or more people each. In one grave (No. 123) five people were buried wearing red-lacquered combs, sashes and necklaces of stone and amber beads.723 At the Nishi-Shimamatsu 5 site (西島松5遺跡), dug in 2000–2004, 84 pit graves from the 7th–8th centuries and six ditched graves from the 8th–9th centuries held more than 170 metal objects. All were made outside Hokkaido, including 27 swords.24 One decorated sword was probably made in the Kinai region around Nara in the 7th century. The finds became Important Cultural Properties in August 2024.25
  • Ainu era: Remains of more than 100 buildings from roughly 300–500 years ago have been found along about 1 km of the old Karinba River. Four chashi (fortified sites) are known.26 Details are in the Ainu heritage section.
  • Matsumae and Edo contact: In 1755 the Hida merchant Takekawa Kyūbei (武川久兵衛, of the Hidaya house) logged the Izari River valley under a Matsumae permit. In 1805 Yamada Bun'emon (山田文右衛門), manager of the Yūfutsu trading post (勇払場所), set up a fishery at Izabuto (漁太). It took 3,000–4,000 koku of salmon and trout a year. In 1857 Yamada and others cut the Chitose-goe road (千歳越新道) from Zenibako to Chitose.13
  • Meiji pioneers:
    • 1870: settlers from the Kōchi domain were the first to break ground.1
    • 1873: Nakayama Kyūzō (中山久蔵) grew rice at Shimamatsu from the cold-tolerant Akage (赤毛) variety.13 His success is credited with opening rice farming to central and northern Hokkaido.27 The same year the Sapporo Hondō road opened with a post station at Shimamatsu-zawa.8 The restored Former Shimamatsu Post Station (旧島松駅逓所), where William S. Clark is said to have said "Boys, be ambitious" in 1877, stands just over the city line in Kitahiroshima.27
    • 1881: Emperor Meiji rested at Izari on his tour of Hokkaido.13
    • 1886: organized settlement began with a group from Iwakuni and Waki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The city overview says 65 households and the city chronicle says 68. They settled along the Izari River.113
    • 1887: 49 households of former Hagi-domain samurai, also from Yamaguchi, followed.13
    • 1893: 78 households came from Ishikawa and Toyama as members of the Kaetsunō Kaikōsha (加越能開耕社) settlement company.13 Japanese Wikipedia gives "more than 100."8
    • 1897: when the village office opened, the two villages had 143 households and 572 people.1
  • Village to town:
    • 1901: part of Shimamatsu became an army training ground.13
    • 1922: a power station at Banjiri brought electric light to the village.13
    • 1926: the private Hokkaido Railway, now the JR Chitose Line, opened Shimamatsu and Eniwa stations.8
    • 1936: the army's grand maneuvers were held around the Shimamatsu training ground.13
    • 1939–1943: the Eniwa Mine (恵庭鉱山) operated. Test digging had begun in 1932.8
    • After 1950 Eniwa became a military town. A National Police Reserve camp opened in 1950 on the grounds of a former army training unit and later became JGSDF Camp Kita-Eniwa. Camp Minami-Eniwa and the Hokkaido supply depot followed in 1952. Three JGSDF camps remain today.138
    • 1962–1967: in the Eniwa Incident (恵庭事件), in December 1962, two dairy-farming brothers cut JGSDF telephone lines to protest firing exercises. The Sapporo District Court acquitted them on 29 March 1967 without ruling on whether the Self-Defense Forces are constitutional.28
  • Suburban growth:
    • 1970: Eniwa became a city. In 1971 the first section of the Dō-ō Expressway, between Kitahiroshima and Chitose, opened with an Eniwa interchange.138
    • 1980: lots in the Megumino new town went on sale, and the Izari River Dam was completed.13
    • 1981: a record 406 mm of rain and Typhoon No. 15 breached an Izari River levee.13
    • 1982: Megumino Station opened.13
    • 1987: the population passed 50,000.1
    • 1988: lots in the Eniwa Techno Park industrial estate went on sale.13
    • 1989: the Sapporo Hokkaido Brewery shipped its first beer.13

  • Garden city era:
    • 2005: the Karinba site became a National Historic Site. The next year Hana Road Eniwa and the Ecorin Village farm park opened.138
    • 2016: Hana Road Eniwa passed 10 million visitors.13
    • 2018: the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake measured shindo 5+ in Eniwa and blacked out the whole city.13
    • 2019: the resident population reached 70,000 on 30 September.13

    • 2021: the first Hanafuru Sky Lantern Festival (はなふるスカイランタンまつり) was held on 6 November.13
    • 2022: Eniwa hosted Garden Festa Hokkaido 2022, the National Urban Greening Fair, from 25 June to 24 July. It drew about 340,000 visitors.13
    • 2025: the city formed a council in July to bid for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters' new farm-team facility.13
    • 2026: Eniwa hosted the 32nd National Flower Town Convention (全国花のまちづくり大会) on 27–28 June.29

Geography & climate

  • Layout: Eniwa lies on the Ishikari Plain. Its homes are in three main areas: Eniwa in the south, Megumino in the middle and Shimamatsu in the north.15 Counting the Self-Defense Force training grounds, about two-thirds of the city is forest. The western mountains are in Shikotsu-Toya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園).8 By land-register category, forest (山林) is 45.6% of the city, rice paddies 9.3%, fields 5.1% and residential land 5.5%.12

  • Mountains: Mount Eniwa (恵庭岳, 1,320 m) is an active volcano on the northwest rim of the Shikotsu caldera, on the unsettled Eniwa–Chitose boundary. The summit dome is crumbling, and climbers are asked to turn back at the second lookout. The ski downhill races of the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics were held on its western slope.11 Other main peaks include Mount Izari (漁岳, 1,318 m), on the border with Sapporo and Chitose, and Mount Soranuma (空沼岳, 1,251 m).821

  • Rivers and lakes:

    • The Izari River (漁川, 46.8 km) rises east of Mount Izari in western Eniwa, flows east past the city center and joins the Chitose River near Izabuto.21
    • The city reaches north to the Shimamatsu River.15
    • Lake Eniwa (えにわ湖) is the reservoir behind the Izari River Dam. The dam is 45.5 m high and 270 m long at the crest, and it holds 15.3 million m³.30
    • Within the Chitose River system, the native Dolly Varden trout (オショロコマ) has been confirmed only in parts of the Izari and Rarumanai rivers.21

  • Climate: Eniwa has a humid continental climate and is officially a heavy-snow area.8 JMA's Eniwa-Shimamatsu station (1991–2020 normals) records:

    • annual mean temperature 7.2 °C, with January at −6.2 °C and August at 20.6 °C
    • annual precipitation 1,061.3 mm
    • annual snowfall 534 cm31

    Record extremes are 34.5 °C (24 July 2025) and −26.9 °C (2 February 1996). The deepest snow on record was 154 cm on 23 February 2022.32

Economy & industry
  • Population trends: Eniwa's population grew every year from 1970 until 2012 and first fell in 2013.8 It then held at about 70,000: 70,331 at the 2020 Census and 70,031 in August 2026.92 In 2020, 28.2% of residents were 65 or older and 12.5% were under 15.9 The daytime population was 93.0% of the resident population, a sign of how many people commute out of the city.9
  • Agriculture: Farming grew up around rice and dairy. Suburban vegetable and flower-seedling growing has become more important in recent years.33 The 2020 agricultural census counted 184 farm businesses working 3,547 ha. In 2025 the city had 3,150 dairy cattle on 16 farms and 3,680 pigs.34 Eniwa is one of Hokkaido's leading producers of flower seedlings, and cut flowers and trees for landscaping are growing too.4 JA Dōō (道央農業協同組合) has its head office in Eniwa.8
  • Manufacturing: In 2023, 88 factories employing 4,903 people shipped ¥170.2 billion of goods. Food products accounted for ¥62.1 billion and beverages and feed for ¥36.7 billion.34 The city says about 250 companies operate in its eight industrial parks.35 The best-known plant is Sapporo Breweries' Hokkaido Brewery (1989).13 Rapidus's semiconductor fab in Chitose is about 20 minutes away by car, and the city is studying a new industrial park for its supply chain.35
  • Defense: The JGSDF has three camps in the city: Kita-Eniwa, Minami-Eniwa and Shimamatsu.8
  • Tourism: In fiscal 2024 the city had 1.82 million visitors. Almost all were day-trippers; only 5,700 stayed overnight. Foreign overnight guests jumped to 3,073, from 66 the year before.34
  • Revitalization: The city built its brand, "Garden City Eniwa," around flowers. Projects include Hanafuru (2020), the 2022 National Urban Greening Fair and the 2026 National Flower Town Convention.1329

Sapporo Classic (サッポロクラシック) Beer An all-malt lager sold only in Hokkaido and brewed only at the Hokkaido Brewery in Eniwa, with water that comes from Mount Eniwa.6 Try it fresh at the brewery tour or at the Walhalla (ヴァルハラ) Genghis Khan (lamb barbecue) restaurant in the same building.36 An ordinance that took effect in April 2017 encourages people to make toasts with Eniwa-brewed beer.13
Ebisu pumpkin (えびすかぼちゃ) Vegetable A kabocha variety bred by a Kyoto seed company in 1964. Eniwa grew it early and shipped it to Kansai as "Eniwa no Ebisu." Since Hana Road Eniwa opened, pumpkin sweets have been developed from it.8 In 2015 Eniwa set a Guinness World Record by lining up 2,015 jack-o'-lanterns.13
Flower seedlings and cut flowers Horticulture Pansies, marigolds, petunias, begonias and more. The Hana-ippai Bunka Kyōkai (花いっぱい文化協会) arranges about 100,000 low-cost seedlings for its roughly 70 member groups, which plant community flowerbeds.4 It also holds public pansy and viola sales in spring and autumn.37 You can buy flowers at Kanona and the Sun Garden (サンガーデン) nursery.3839
Konayuki Tonton pork (こな雪とんとん) Meat Pork from pigs raised outdoors in Eniwa. It goes into the skillet curry and sausage bread at Hana Road Eniwa.1618
Goasis daifuku (豆大福・よもぎ大福・えに塩大福) Sweets Rice cakes made with glutinous rice grown for the shop by an Eniwa farmer. Its isobe-mochi (grilled rice cakes) have sold about 4,200 in a month. The daifuku are sold only at Hana Road Eniwa.16
Eniwa rice Grain Eniwa grew some of Hokkaido's first rice (Nakayama Kyūzō, 1873) and still grows it.138 Rice balls made from Eniwa rice are sold at Eniwa Omusubi Ebisu (恵庭おむすび ゑびす) in Hanafuru, including a salted haskap-berry filling.5
Dairy soft serve and gelato Dairy Farm-milk soft serve at Grace Court, run by Murakami Farm (むらかみ牧場), and tomato soft serve at Yoko Farm (余湖農園).40 Hanafuru sells a "blender" soft serve mixed with Eniwa strawberries.5 LicoLico makes gelato in Eniwa with milk from nearby farms.6

  • Performing arts: The Suzuran Odori (すずらん踊り), named after the city flower, is Eniwa's local folk dance. It is performed at summer festivals.48 Eniwa-dake Taiko (恵庭岳太鼓) is a local drum group.50
  • Shrines and temples: Toyosaka Shrine (豊栄神社) began as a small shrine at Moizari in 1874 and got a proper hall in 1891. It is associated with the Yamaguchi settlers. Eniwa Shrine (恵庭神社) is associated with the Toyama settlers.138 Ten'yū-ji (天融寺, Jōdo Shinshū Ōtani school) has a standing Amida Buddha that is a Hokkaido-designated cultural property. Daian-ji (大安寺, Sōtō Zen) is linked to the Yamaguchi settlers.8 In 1887 the private Dōmon school (私立洞門尋常小学校), forerunner of Eniwa Elementary School, opened in Daian-ji's grounds.13
  • Museums: The Eniwa City Museum of Local History (恵庭市郷土資料館) is free.52 It has six galleries, from volcanic geology through Jōmon and Ainu culture to the Meiji settlers. Its Karinba room shows the real bead necklaces and replicas of the lacquer ornaments.2253 The original lacquerware is shown for about a week each autumn.53

Ainu heritage
  • Settlements and forts: Along about 1 km of the right bank of the upper old Karinba River, archaeologists found more than 100 buildings from roughly 300–500 years ago. The city calls it a long-lived "Karinba Kotan." No oral traditions about it survive.26 From the late Meiji into the Taishō period, a village called Kamaka Kotan (カマカコタン) lay on the middle Karinba River, across the Eniwa–Chitose line. As of 2023 four chashi sites were known: Moizari, Shimamatsu B, Shimamatsu C and Karinba.26
  • Bear-hunting rock shelters: In the western mountains, three rock shelters (shiratchise, シラッチセ) under overhangs of welded tuff survive. They are called Honryū, Mitsumata and Kanayamazawa. Ainu hunters stayed there in spring to hunt bears as they left their dens. They held opunire (bear-sending) rites with the skulls at shelter altars.26
  • Living traditions: The Eniwa Ainu Association was founded in June 1975. It had 20 member households in 2006 and 5 in December 2025. Since 2012 it has held the Shiratchise Kamuynomi, a prayer at the Honryū shelter. Since 2023 it has held a kamuynomi-icharpa (prayer and ancestor rite) at the city's archaeology workroom, with help from neighboring Ainu associations.26
  • Learning: The museum redid its "Ainu Mosir" gallery in 2017. It shows a dugout canoe, a nusasan altar and many swords and knives from local digs.2622 Since 2021 the city has run an Ainu culture program for six junior and senior high school students. It also runs public study tours; the 2026 tour, on 3 October, visits Ainu sites in Shinhidaka.2654 Public lectures in 2023 and 2024 looked at what the explorer Matsuura Takeshirō recorded about Eniwa and its Ainu culture at the end of the Edo period.5556

Sister & friendship cities
  • Waki, Yamaguchi Prefecture (和木町), Japan: sister city since 10 July 1979. Many of Eniwa's first organized settlers came from the Iwakuni–Waki area in 1886, and children from both towns still visit each other every year.74133
  • Timaru, New Zealand: sister city since 13 February 2008. Ties began in 2001, when the Eniwa Chamber of Commerce chose Timaru as its overseas partner. Both cities build their identity around gardens.751
  • Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture (藤枝市), Japan: friendship city since 26 March 2016.74
  • Guiyang, Guizhou, China (贵阳市): friendship exchanges since 1986. In 2002 a Japan–China friendship cherry garden was planted in Guiyang.33

Notable people
  • Nakayama Kyūzō (中山久蔵): Grew rice from the Akage variety at Shimamatsu in 1873, which helped rice farming spread to central and northern Hokkaido.1327
  • Chisato Fukushima (福島千里): Sprinter for Hokkaido Hi-Tec AC, whose results appear in the city chronicle. She ran in the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, set Japanese records at 100 m and 200 m in 2009, broke the 200 m record again in 2016, and was part of a record-setting 4×100 m relay team in 2011.13
  • Asuka Terada (寺田明日香): Hurdler. The city chronicle records that in 2007 she won the 100 m hurdles at the national high school championships for a third straight year.13
  • Yumi Furuya (古谷有美): TBS announcer, from Eniwa.8
