Imakane 今金町

いまかねちょう

Imakane is an inland farming town in northern Hiyama, with no coastline. It grows the Imakane Danshaku potato, the only Danshaku-variety potato registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) in Japan. The Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River flows through the town and has been named Japan's cleanest river more often than any other. Upstream at Pirika there are a 20,000-year-old Stone Age site, an unusually long dam, an onsen hotel and a ski hill.12345

Known for

  • Imakane Danshaku potatoes (今金男しゃく).
    • Registered as GI product No. 86 on 9 September 2019. The registered production area is Imakane and neighboring Setana.1
    • It is the only Danshaku potato with GI status. The only other potato on the national GI register is Mishima Bareisho (三島馬鈴薯), a May Queen potato from Shizuoka.21920
    • Every shipment must have a starch content (Lehmann value) of at least 13.5%. It sells for 20% or more above Danshaku potatoes from other areas.121
    • About 90% of the table potatoes go to the Tokyo region.21
  • The Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River (後志利別川). Southern Hokkaido's only Class A river.22 It has come top of the national river water-quality survey 14 times between 1987 and 2012, more than any other Class A river.423 Town pages give lower or vaguer counts ("ten times", "more than ten times").1524
  • Pirika Dam (美利河ダム). It is a combined dam, part concrete gravity and part rockfill. Its crest is 1,480 m long, the longest of any dam of this type in Japan.2425 (The subprefecture's 2026 profile says only "among the longest in Japan.")3 Its fish ladder bypasses the reservoir for about 2.4 km. It was the longest in Japan when it was finished in 2005.2426 A fish ladder of about 7 km was later planned for Sanru Dam in Shimokawa, and in 2016 Nikkei called it the longest in Japan.27
  • The Pirika Site (ピリカ遺跡).
    • This Paleolithic site became a National Historic Site in 1994.2823
    • About 200,000 stone tools, weighing 800 kg in total, have been recovered here.29
    • 163 objects from the site are National Important Cultural Properties and are on display at the free Pirika Paleolithic Culture Museum.30
  • The Pirika resort area. Kur Plaza Pirika (クアプラザピリカ) combines an onsen hotel, a ski area, a campground with an RV park, and park golf, all beside the dam.313
  • Farming. The town says it has the largest area of rice paddies in southern Hokkaido.24 It also grows soft white leeks (軟白長ネギ), cherry tomatoes and Tsurunoko soybeans (鶴の子大豆).24
  • The Immanuel Christian settlement. Christian settlers founded a colony here in the early 1890s, and Ogino Ginko (荻野吟子), Japan's first licensed woman doctor, lived here.3233

Sights & activities

Nature & scenery

  • Pirika Dam and Pirika Lake (美利河ダム・ピリカ湖). A window on the stepped section of the 2.4 km fish ladder lets you watch yamame, ugui dace, white-spotted char and ayu, depending on the season.24 The river bureau runs public tours of the dam.53
  • The Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River. In autumn, salmon swim up it and nearby rivers.22 The English guide says it is popular for fishing and canoeing, and the town advertises rafting at Pirika in summer.2331
  • Tokoyo-no-matsu (常代の松), Tanekawa. Despite the name, which means "pine," it is a Japanese yew said to be about 1,000 years old.74 It stands beside National Route 230, about 4 km from the town centre toward Oshamambe.15 Early settlers used it as a landmark, and it is now treated as a guardian of travelers.23
  • Kuma-suberi no Toride (熊すべりの砦). A rock face so steep that "even a bear would slip," between Pirika Dam and Oku-Pirika.75
  • Imakane Town General Park (今金町総合公園). On the hill behind Imakane Elementary School. It has views over the town and farmland and is known for cherry blossoms and azaleas. The lookout is open 9:00–17:00 and closed from 1 November to 30 April.31
  • De Molen Imakane (デ・モーレンいまかね). A Dutch-style windmill built in 1993 in Holland Park (オランダ通り公園), where tulips bloom in spring. It is the main venue for town events.2315

Hiking

  • Kanikan-dake (カニカン岳, 981 m).
    • Getting there: the trailhead is about 10 km from the dam along Prefectural Road 836, and the last 3.7 km is unpaved. There is parking at the trailhead.76
    • The trail: 4 km each way, about 2 hours 40 minutes up and 2 hours down.76 It climbs through beech woods, and Shirane-aoi flowers grow near the top.76
    • Views: Mount Kariba, Mount Yōtei and the whole Oshima Peninsula.76
    • Season: Road 836 opened for 2026 on 22 May. It closes in winter.7776
  • Maruyama (丸山, 674.2 m). From the top you can see both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific.78 Prefectural Road 999 leads to it. The section beyond the upper Pirika gate has been closed because of rockfall, with no reopening date as of June 2026.7750 The 1.4 km section between the lower and upper Pirika gates was also closed for a time because of rockfall risk and reopened at 10:10 on 3 September 2026.79

Onsen

  • Pirika Onsen at Kur Plaza Pirika (ピリカ温泉・クアプラザピリカ), 205-1 Pirika (字美利河205-1).
    • Indoor and open-air baths facing the forest, and a sauna.80
    • The water is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring. It is heated and recirculated.80
    • Day bathing: 12:00–22:00 (last entry 21:00). Adults ¥600, children ¥300.80
    • A 6:00–8:00 morning bath starts from the 2026 season.81
    • The hotel opened in 1990 and is now run by TTN Corporation of Itami, Hyōgo.2382
  • Attaka Land (あったからんど). A public onsen in the town centre, opened in 1995, next to Hotel Imakane.8384
    • The strongly salty spring water is saltier than seawater.83
    • Adults ¥500. Open 12:00–22:00.83
    • Closed from 24 September to 11 November 2026 for repairs. A shuttle runs from the General Gymnasium to Tanekawa Onsen instead, except on Thursdays.85 Another long closure for major renovation is planned for fiscal 2027.85
  • Tanekawa Onsen rest house (種川温泉休憩所), 296 Tanekawa (字種川296).
    • A community-run salt spring. The baths were fully renovated in 2007.8384
    • Adults ¥500. Open Monday to Wednesday and Friday 10:00–21:00; weekends and holidays 9:00–21:00. Closed Thursdays.83
    • The English guide mentions hand-made soba served in winter.84
  • Oku-Pirika Onsen, "Yama-no-Ie" (奥美利河温泉「山の家」). A lukewarm simple spring at about 38 °C, with a mixed open-air bath where swimsuits were allowed.8447 It is closed indefinitely because the buildings have aged.50

Museums & heritage

  • Pirika Paleolithic Culture Museum (ピリカ旧石器文化館), 228-1 Pirika (字美利河228-1).
    • Opened in June 2003.30
    • Exhibits: a 10-minute film, a gallery on the site, a room with 163 Important Cultural Property objects, and a hands-on corner with full-size 3D replicas.30
    • Visiting: open 9:30–16:30. Free. Closed Mondays and from 1 December to 31 March, but open on Mondays during Golden Week, the summer school holidays and Obon. Audio guides in Japanese, English and Chinese.30
  • Crafts and workshops at the museum. Making a replica stone tool costs ¥100, a talc-bead strap ¥300, a leather key ring ¥500 and a mineral key ring (agate, jasper or obsidian set in resin) ¥300. Fire-starting is free.86 Stone-tool workshops cost ¥500, on set dates such as 21–23 September 2026.86
  • Outdoor excavation display (石器製作跡). A one-minute walk from the museum. It shows a toolmaking floor, with the excavated stone tools put back where they were found on a cast of the ground surface.87
  • Pirika sea cow replica. A reconstructed skeleton has been kept since October 2010 in the cultural-property storehouse next to the museum.40
  • Inmanuel Hill (インマヌエルの丘), Kamioka. The church and a monument to the settlers, with the Ogino Ginko poem stone beside the church.3245

Outdoor & seasonal activities

  • Pirika Ski Area (ピリカスキー場).
    • Five runs for beginners to experts, looking down on Pirika Dam, with a mini terrain park.88
    • It advertises "the best snow in southern Hokkaido."88
    • In 2021 it listed a 1,500 m run, a 30° slope, night skiing and views of Mount Yōtei; the season runs from December to March.89
    • Discount lift tickets for the 2026–27 season go on sale on 1 October 2026.90
  • Pirika Camp (ピリカキャンプ).
    • Auto free site: ¥1,800 per adult per night, including one onsen ticket.81
    • RV Park A area: five powered pitches by the ski slope, ¥2,500 on weekdays and ¥3,000 on weekends and holidays. Reservation is required.81
    • A private lodge for 2–8 people costs from ¥24,000 a night. Pets are allowed on conditions.81
  • Park golf. Pirika has two 18-hole courses, one on the ski slope and one by the dam (¥300 in 2022).91 There are also free riverside courses, Oasis (オアシス) and Seiryū (せいりゅう), with free equipment rental at the General Gymnasium.9293
  • Stream fishing.
    • Species: yamabe (masu salmon parr), rainbow trout and iwana char.94
    • Spots: the Toshibetsu-Mena, Hakaimappu, Chūshibetsu and Pirikabetsu rivers.94
    • Rules: yamabe fishing is banned in April and May, and some waters are protected.94
  • Footpaths. Four walking routes were created with Sapporo International University.95
    • Two go through the old town centre: 6.6 km (about 2 hours 10 minutes) and 4.6 km (about 1 hour 30 minutes).95
    • Two go through the farmland of Kamioka: the Kumokaze course, 7.6 km (about 2 hours 30 minutes), named after a poem by Ogino Ginko, and the Den'en course, 6.7 km (about 2 hours 15 minutes), which passes Aishirei Land.95

Food experiences

  • Kamioka Dining (加味丘dining), Kur Plaza Pirika. Italian cooking, with lunch 11:00–14:00 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays; winter days vary).96 Dinner for hotel guests includes hand-made pasta and fries made from Imakane Danshaku.65
  • Pirika strawberry farm. There is no strawberry picking in 2026, but berries are sold in packs and as smoothies at the Kur Plaza shop.97
  • Places to eat in town. The town lists Kiraku Shokudō (hand-made soba), Hachiyo (local cooking), Jimama Ryōri Pon'yū and Shoku-no-Eki Baron (食の駅 ばろん), which has the same address as Attaka Land, among others. Check that they are still open before going.98
  • Farm experiences. Since 2021, Hokkaido residents have been able to join a supporters' club and "owner" scheme for Imakane Danshaku, which sends each member potatoes and processed goods.2

Roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki)

No Michi-no-Eki is located in Imakane.99 The Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki list also shows none in neighboring Oshamambe or Yakumo.99

Within Imakane, the best stop for a rest, a bath and a meal is Kur Plaza Pirika, just off National Route 230 by Pirika Dam.96100

The closest roadside stations are in nearby towns:

  • Tekkui Land Taisei (道の駅てっくいランド大成), Setana.
    • Address: 378 Taisei-ku Hirahama, Setana (久遠郡せたな町大成区平浜378), on National Route 229 facing the Sea of Japan.101
    • About 1 hour by car from Kamioka via Routes 229 and 230, according to the subprefecture (as of 2021).32
    • Registered on 11 April 1995 as Hokkaido No. 21.101
    • Hours: 9:00–17:00 from April to October and 9:00–16:00 from November to March. Closed 30 December to 3 January.101
    • It faces the Sea of Japan, known for its sunsets, and has showers for beachgoers during the swimming season.101
  • Yotteke! Shimamaki (道の駅よってけ！島牧), Shimamaki.
    • Address: 11-1 Chiwase, Shimamaki (島牧郡島牧村字千走11-1), on National Route 229.10299
    • A food-themed station serving fresh Sea of Japan seafood. Open 9:00–17:00 (restaurant 11:00–14:00). Closed Tuesdays (the next day if Tuesday is a holiday) and over the New Year.102
  • Kuromatsunai (道の駅くろまつない), Kuromatsunai.
    • Address: 8-10 Shiraikawa, Kuromatsunai (寿都郡黒松内町字白井川8番地10), on National Route 5, beyond Oshamambe.103
    • Registered on 27 August 1999.99
    • It has a bakery and a pizza workshop. Open 9:00–18:00 from April to September and 9:00–17:00 from October to March. No regular closing day from April to October; closed Tuesdays from November to March.103

Getting there & around

  • Rail.
    • No trains have run through the town since the Setana Line closed in 1987. The nearest JR station is Kunnui (国縫), on the Hakodate Main Line.6
    • Rail travellers change at Oshamambe Station (長万部駅) to a bus.104
    • The town gives these times: about 120 minutes by JR from Sapporo, or 90 minutes from Hakodate, then about 70 minutes by bus.15
    • Fares listed by the town: unreserved limited express Hokuto, ¥6,930 from Sapporo and ¥4,250 from Hakodate.104
  • Buses (Hakodate Bus, 函館バス).
    • Setana Line (瀬棚線). Runs from Oshamambe Terminal through Imakane to Setana. It was cut from seven to six round trips a day on 1 October 2025.51
    • Setana–Yakumo Line (瀬棚八雲線). A new route with three round trips a day. It replaced the direct "Kaisoku Setana" bus to Hakodate. To reach Hakodate, change at Yakumo to the Hakodate–Oshamambe Line.51
    • To Pirika. From Oshamambe it takes about 30 minutes to "Pirika Dam-mae" (美利河ダム前), a 5-minute walk from the museum.100 Kur Plaza Pirika also has a stop, but tell the driver when you board.96
    • To Sapporo. Hokuto Kōtsū's "Tokkyū Setana" bus has been suspended since after fiscal 2018.6
  • By car.
    • Leave the Dō-Ō Expressway at Kunnui IC (国縫IC) and take National Route 230, which runs east–west through the town between Oshamambe and Setana.1596 Prefectural Road 263 links the town with Yakumo.15
    • Kur Plaza Pirika is about 15 minutes from the interchange.96
    • The subprefecture puts central Imakane about 3 hours from Sapporo (about 2 hours 15 minutes to Kunnui IC, then about 45 minutes).32
    • The town gives about 2 hours from Hakodate, by National Route 5 and prefectural roads.15
  • Getting around.
    • The town runs an on-demand reservation bus, Runrun-gō (ルンるん号), to each district, including Pirika and Kamioka.105
    • Otherwise a car is needed. There is no public transport to the trailheads.7678

Practical tips

  • When to go.
    • Late May to October is the main season. Kanikan-dake's access road opens in late May.77
    • The Pirika museum is open April to November.30
    • Most festivals are held from July to September. Early potatoes ship in August and September.21
    • In winter, from December to March, Pirika's five-run ski area is open, but expect heavy snow.8854
  • Check before you go. Several places are closed or changed as of September 2026:
    • Attaka Land is closed from 24 September to 11 November 2026, and more closures are planned.85
    • Oku-Pirika Onsen is closed indefinitely.50
    • The upper section of Prefectural Road 999, to Maruyama and the Pirika–Futamata recreation forest, is closed.7750
    • There is no strawberry picking at Pirika in 2026.97
  • Brown bears.
    • In June 2026 the outdoor excavation display at Pirika was closed twice after bear sightings, each time for about two weeks. One sighting was within 1 km of the museum.1065
    • The town advises against hiking or fishing alone because of bears, and asks hikers to be off the mountain by 16:00.7794
    • The town bills search costs to people who get lost while foraging or hiking.77
    • Check the subprefecture's bear alert page before going into the hills.107
  • Protect the farms. Do not walk into potato fields. The town is working to stop the spread of potato cyst nematode, which could hurt its signature crop.58
  • Supplies. The town lists two Seicomart stores, a Lawson and stores selling fishing tackle.94
  • Rooms. There are few places to stay: Kur Plaza Pirika, Hotel Imakane and three small ryokan.108 Book ahead during festivals.

Symbols Town flower: tulip (チューリップ). Town tree: Japanese yew (オンコ／イチイ). Both were chosen by a survey of residents in 1977 for the town's 80th anniversary.15 The town emblem dates from 1967.15 Motto: "いいまち 今金 夢のまち" ("Imakane, a good town, a town of dreams").16 No town bird was found.
Mascot Imarun (いまルン). It was chosen in 2012 from 177 entries in a nationwide contest and is based on the Imakane Danshaku potato.1763 The town's English guide also lists a second character, "Danshakun the Potato."16

Name origin
  • Imakane (今金) is not an Ainu name. It combines the first characters of two settlers' surnames, Imamura Tōjirō (今村藤次郎) and Kanamori Ishirō (金森石郎).143
    • The two men came in 1893 and laid out the streets of the present town centre.146
    • Their district was called Imakane, and the whole village took the name when it became a town in 1947.14
  • Toshibetsu (利別), the village name until 1947, comes from the Ainu name of the river. There are several readings: tu-us-pet ("big river of spurs running down from the mountains"), to-us-pet ("river with many ponds"), tus-pet ("rope river" or "snake river") and chus-pet ("net river"). None has been confirmed.4
    • "Shiribeshi" (後志) was added to tell it apart from the Toshibetsu River in Tokachi. The basin used to belong to Shiribeshi Province.4
  • Other Ainu names in the town. The town describes Pirika (美利河) and Kanikan (カニカン) as Ainu names that are still in use.14
    • Pirika comes from pirka-pet, "beautiful (good) river."34
    • Kanikan-dake comes from Kanikan-nupuri, usually translated "golden mountain." Gold was mined on it in the Edo period.35
    • Tanekawa (種川) is the everyday name of the Meppu River (メップ川). "Meppu" comes from Ainu mem, "spring-fed pool."36
  • Japanese names. Hanaishi (花石, "flower stones") refers to the local agate.37 Kamioka (神丘, "God's hill") was called Inmanuel (インマヌエル) until the district names were revised in 1933.386

History
  • About 1.2 million years ago. The area was under the sea.39
    • The fossil of the Pirika sea cow (ピリカカイギュウ) was found in 1983 in the Setana Formation (瀬棚層). Local residents dug it out the next year.40
    • Researchers think it was related to, and probably an ancestor of, Steller's sea cow.40
  • About 20,000 years ago. People first settled here and made large numbers of stone tools at Pirika.39
    • The finds include what are described as Japan's oldest ornamental beads.41
    • Obsidian was brought from elsewhere in Hokkaido. The beads are thought to have come from the Asian mainland.28
  • From the Jōmon period to the Ainu period. The town's timeline runs through the Jōmon, Epi-Jōmon (続縄文) and Satsumon periods and then Ainu culture, from about the 14th century.39
  • 17th-century gold rush.
    • Gold panning on the upper Toshibetsu began around 1634–35.6 It grew after the Matsumae domain was set up, and gold was also mined on Kanikan-dake.39
    • Panning stopped with Shakushain's War in 1669.39
    • According to English Wikipedia, gold from the area was used to build Nikkō Tōshō-gū (unverified).13
  • Late Edo period.
    • From 1854, the Hakodate magistrate's office (箱館奉行) panned for gold at Pirika.639
    • In 1857, the explorer Matsuura Takeshirō (松浦武四郎) went up the Kunnui River and came down the Toshibetsu.39
  • Meiji-era settlement.
    • 1880. Ōshima Kanzaemon and others find agate and manganese upstream.39
    • 1891. Two Doshisha students, Shikata Yukiyoshi (志方之善) and Maruyama Yōjirō (丸山要次郎), survey the Kamioka area for a Christian ideal village.642 Potato growing begins the same year.21
    • 1893. Congregationalist and Anglican settlers from Kyoto and Saitama found "Inmanuel," Hebrew for "God with us."4332 The Anglican group included Amanuma Tsunesaburō, a believer from Kumagaya in Saitama.43 Imamura and Kanamori also settle on the site of today's town centre, and soybean growing starts.39
    • 1894.
      • Katō Masanosuke (加藤政之助) and his brother settle at Tanekawa.39 Katō was a Saitama politician who had set up an association in Saitama to recruit settlers for Hokkaido.44
      • Ogino Ginko joins her husband Shikata at Inmanuel in June 1894.3345 The town's own timeline gives 1896.39
    • 1896. Settlers begin clearing Kinbara (金原), Suzuoka (鈴岡) and Yatsuka (八束), and Imakane Hachiman Shrine (今金八幡宮) is founded.3946
  • Toshibetsu Village.
    • 1897. The area separates from Setana Village as Toshibetsu Village.14 The Pirika manganese mine is booming, with more than 900 miners.39
    • 1908. Rice is grown successfully in paddies.39
    • 1909. Ueda Jinsaku of Shiraishi invents the Ueda bean seeder, which spreads across Hokkaido.39
    • 1910. Tōjō Kurōta finds the Oku-Pirika hot spring while prospecting for gold. His successor, Tōjō Toshio, opens an inn there in 1919.47
    • 1912. The Meppu manganese mine is found.39
  • Railway and town status.
    • The Setana Line (瀬棚線) opens in stages from Kunnui (国縫): to Hanaishi in 1929, to Imakane on 30 October 1930, and to Setana on 1 November 1932.394849
    • 1937. Seed potatoes are first shipped to Honshu.39
    • 1947. Toshibetsu becomes Imakane Town.14
  • Postwar decades.
    • 1953–55. Local farms switch entirely to the Danshaku variety and begin shipping it under the Imakane Danshaku name.21
    • 1967. The Pirika manganese mine closes after running since 1892.6 The English guide says mining went on only until about 1945.42
    • 1978. Stone tools are found during a clay survey for the planned dam. Excavations in 1983–84 recover more than 110,000 of them.29
  • The dam and the railway's end.
    • A flood in August 1962 led to plans for Pirika Dam.23 Construction started in 1979 according to the town; Japanese Wikipedia gives 1975.2425 The dam was finished in 1991.24
    • 16 March 1987. The JNR Setana Line closes.49
  • 1990s–2000s.
    • 1990. Kur Plaza Pirika opens.23
    • 1994. The Pirika Site is designated a National Historic Site.28

    • July 2026. Excavated material held by Kokugakuin University is returned to the town, 30 years after the university began field schools at Pirika. A symposium is set for 11 October 2026.52

Geography & climate
  • Setting.
    • Imakane is in the north of the Oshima Peninsula, between the Kariba mountains (狩場山系) to the north and the Yūrappu mountains (ユーラップ山系) to the south.14
    • It is one of the few towns in southern Hokkaido with no coastline.14
    • The town gives its position as 42°25′N, 140°01′E.14
    • It is about 180 km from Sapporo and 120 km from Hakodate.14
  • Land use. Forest covers about 80% of the town.15 The town's land-use table (2016) gives 443.14 km² of forest, 29.49 km² of rice paddies, 29.85 km² of other farmland and 29.61 km² of wild land.10
  • Mountains. The north of the town is mountainous. Peaks include Kanikan-dake (カニカン岳, 981 m) and Oshamambe-dake (長万部岳, 972 m).6
  • The river. The whole town lies in the basin of the Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River.6
    • The river rises near Oshamambe-dake, flows south into Pirika Lake behind Pirika Dam, then turns west through the town and reaches the Sea of Japan in Setana.4
    • The town's English guide gives its length as about 80 km.23
    • Ten families and 23 species of fish have been recorded in it, including cherry salmon and other fish that migrate between river and sea.24
  • Pirika Dam. It is 40 m high and generates up to 4,000 kW of hydroelectric power.254 It is run by the national Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau.53
  • Wildlife.
    • Brown bears, Ezo sika deer, raccoon dogs and martens live here.15
    • Beech forests grow close to the northern limit of the species' range.15
    • Wild mountain vegetables (山菜) are plentiful.15

    • January mean −3.6 °C; August mean 21.1 °C, with an average daily high of 25.7 °C.
    • Annual precipitation 1,336.7 mm; annual sunshine 1,324.9 hours.
    • Total snowfall 611 cm a year; the usual deepest snow cover is 95 cm.
  • Climate: records.
    • Record high 34.8 °C (9 August 2006). Record low −21.9 °C (17 February 1978).55
    • Deepest snow on record 149 cm (17 March 1984).55
    • The town notes that the inland climate often brings summer days above 30 °C and early-summer temperatures that are among the highest in Hokkaido.15
    • The town is designated a special heavy-snowfall area (特別豪雪地帯).6

Economy & industry
  • Farming is the main industry. The town calls itself "the leading farming town of southern Hokkaido."14 ALIC's July 2021 report gives these figures for the JA Imakane area:21
    • 286 member farm households, 51% of them run by farmers aged 65 or over.
    • 4,734 ha of cultivated land. Of the 1,568 ha of upland crops and vegetables, potatoes take about 26%, wheat 22%, beans 34% and sugar beet 10%.
    • An average farm size of 16.5 ha, and farm sales of ¥4.9 billion in fiscal 2019.
  • Imakane Danshaku in numbers.
    • About 345 ha were planted in 2020, for seed and table potatoes combined.21
    • Output in 2020 was 8,820 tonnes, of which 6,972 tonnes were shipped. Output usually ranges from 8,000 to 12,000 tonnes.21
    • The starch standard of at least 13.5% has applied since 1994. The 2018 average was 15.8%.21
    • In April 2021, a 10 kg box sold for ¥3,500, against a ¥2,850 average for Danshaku potatoes from other areas.21
    • Koikeya describes Imakane Danshaku as only 0.3% of all the potatoes in Japan.5657
  • Brand protection.
    • The logo trademark was registered in 2005 and the regional collective trademark in March 2018.21
    • In April 2020 the town fully paid for an RTK-GPS base station to support labor-saving "smart" farming.2
    • Since 2008, when potato cyst nematode was found in town fields, the town has asked residents to help stop it spreading.58
  • Other crops and livestock.
    • Rice under the "Imakane rice" (今金米) brand.59
    • Soft white leeks, cherry tomatoes packed on the vine, Tsurunoko soybeans (sold as tofu in Sapporo and Hakodate), dairy and beef cattle.1524

    • The 2025 preliminary count is 13.4% below 2020.8
  • Revitalization.
    • A comprehensive partnership with Sapporo International University (札幌国際大学) since fiscal 2012.61
    • Hometown tax donations (ふるさと納税) have grown fast: from ¥62.0 million (6,014 gifts) in 2024 to ¥116.7 million (12,960 gifts) in 2025.62

  • Taiko drumming. The town's best-known folk performance is Imakane Kariba Daiko (今金狩場太鼓), inspired by Mount Kariba, which the subprefecture calls the finest peak in southern Hokkaido. The group has also performed abroad.1573 Local preservation societies also keep up Kamioka Reimei Daiko (神丘黎明太鼓) and Kinō Daiko (鬼能太鼓).15
  • The Christian heritage.
    • The Anglican and Congregationalist groups at Inmanuel ended up with separate churches around 1898–99. They later merged into one congregation of the United Church of Christ in Japan, and split again in 1954.43
    • Today's Anglican Immanuel Church (聖公会インマヌエル教会) stands on Inmanuel Hill in Kamioka.4332 The English guide dates the congregation to 1896 and the current building to 1968.23
    • A stone beside the church bears a poem by Ogino Ginko about the cold of the Toshibetsu plain.45

Ainu heritage
  • Ainu history in the area.
    • The town says Ainu people once lived along the Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River.14 Names such as Pirika and Kanikan survive from that time.14
    • The town's own timeline sets the Ainu period from about the 14th century. It links the end of the 17th-century gold rush to Shakushain's War of 1669.39
  • No Ainu cultural facility or living tradition was found. No Ainu-specific facility, ceremony or site open to visitors in Imakane turned up in town or subprefecture sources.
  • Where to learn more. For Ainu culture, visit the national Ainu museum and park, Upopoy, in Shiraoi.

Sister & friendship cities
  • International. None found. The Hokkaido list of sister-city ties kept by CLAIR (the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations) does not include Imakane.109 English Wikipedia mentions a student exchange of more than 20 years with Burnside High School in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is a school program, not a sister-city tie, and the town site does not confirm it (unverified).13
  • Domestic. None found. The town has had a comprehensive partnership agreement with Sapporo International University since fiscal 2012.61

Notable people
  • Ogino Ginko (荻野吟子). Japan's first licensed woman doctor. She lived at Inmanuel with her husband Shikata Yukiyoshi from 1894, then opened a clinic in Setana in 1897.33
  • Katō Masanosuke (加藤政之助). A politician from Saitama who promoted settlement in Hokkaido. He moved to Imakane in 1894 and became a landowner here.44
  • Nobukazu Kuriki (栗城史多). Mountaineer, born in Imakane. He was a town "hometown ambassador" and died in 2018.69
  • Satomi Achiwa (阿知波悟美). Actress, born in Imakane, and a hometown ambassador.69
  • Hiroshi Suzuki (鈴木寛). Former Winter Olympic bobsledder for Japan, born in Imakane, and a hometown ambassador.69
  • Katsushi Matsui (松井克師). Professional snowboarder, born in Imakane.69
  • Chiyozakura Teruo (千代櫻輝夫). Former sumo wrestler, born in Imakane.6
