Engaru is a very large inland town in the Okhotsk region, on the upper Yubetsu River. At its western end, in Shirataki, is what the town calls Japan's largest obsidian source, and stone tools made there, the oldest about 30,000 years old, are now the oldest National Treasure in Japan. The town center is where the Asahikawa–Monbetsu Expressway currently ends, and it has a roadside station that drew nearly 800,000 visitors in FY2024 and a hillside of 10 million cosmos.

Known for

  • Shirataki obsidian and Japan's oldest National Treasure. The town calls Shirataki Japan's largest obsidian source10; the geopark council describes it as one of Japan's largest11. On 27 June 2023, 1,965 finds from the Shirataki site group were designated a National Treasure: 1,514 stone tools and 451 sets of refitted flakes. The oldest are about 30,000 years old, which makes them Japan's oldest National Treasure and only the second in Hokkaido, after the hollow clay figure in Hakodate1112.
  • Taiyo no Oka Engaru Park cosmos garden (太陽の丘えんがる公園 虹のひろば). About 10 million cosmos cover 10 ha of hillside from mid-August to late September. The town calls it one of Japan's largest cosmos gardens13.
  • Ganbōiwa (瞰望岩). This crag rises about 78 m above the town center. It is the town's symbol and the source of its name, and since 2011 it has been part of the national Place of Scenic Beauty "Pirikanoka"14.
  • Amamiya No. 21 (雨宮21号). A forest-railway steam locomotive that still carries passengers at Maruseppu. The town says it is the only working forest-railway steam locomotive in Japan, and it is listed as Hokkaido Heritage15.
  • Aikido connections. Morihei Ueshiba, who founded aikido, led a group of settlers from Wakayama to Shirataki in 1912 and stayed seven years. Japanese Wikipedia says it was there that he entered the path of the martial arts, and a monument marks the settlement site as a "place associated with aikido" (合気道ゆかりの地)5.
  • A road hub with a busy roadside station. Michi-no-Eki Engaru Mori no Okhotsk stands beside the Engaru terminus of the expressway. It drew 799,382 visitors in FY2024, and it has a ski slope and, since 2021, a zipline1166.
  • Summer asparagus and Shirataki potatoes. "Engaru Nyokkīzu" (遠軽にょっきーず) asparagus is harvested in summer as well as spring17. Shirataki potatoes grow in fields about 400 m above sea level18.
  • Wood and wooden toys. Ikutahara has a museum of about 10,000 wooden toys from around 40 countries19. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, the five wooden rings were made from thinned timber grown in Engaru, from seeds that countries had brought to the 1964 Tokyo Games20.

Sights & activities

Nature & scenery

  • Taiyo no Oka Engaru Park (太陽の丘えんがる公園). This park takes in a whole hill, including Ganbōiwa and the town-run Miharashi pasture545.
    • In spring, Sargent's cherries flower in its International Friendship Forest, followed by moss phlox and azaleas54.
    • From mid-August to late September, the Niji no Hiroba cosmos garden (Maru-dai 70-1) is in bloom. It is open 9:00–17:00, charges adults ¥600 and children ¥300 when the flowers are out, and does not allow pets1355. The flowers were in full bloom on 11 September 202656.
    • From the Miharashi pasture at the top you can see the Sea of Okhotsk on clear days54.
  • Ganbōiwa. A few minutes' climb to the top, with views over the town14.
  • Yamabiko Falls and Rokumei Falls. 16 km up the Muri valley from Maruseppu, then a 200 m walk. In winter the road is gated 2 km before the parking area, except during guided tours32.
  • Maruseppu wisteria garden (まるせっぷ藤園). A 1 km trellis with 200 wisteria vines, from Kōsei-ji temple to Heiwa-yama Park. It began with a single plant given to the temple's priest in 1945, and flowers in early to mid-June45.
  • Taihei Plateau (大平高原). An upland with a 360° view and dark skies for stargazing. Its road is listed among the "Hokkaido 100 Roads" as the "Taihei Geopark Road"57.
  • Mt. Hirayama (1,771 m). A beginner-friendly climb of about 2.5 hours, past two waterfalls and snowfields to alpine flowers at the top30.

Onsen

  • Setose Onsen Hotel (瀬戸瀬温泉ホテル). About 20 minutes by car from central Engaru. The alkaline simple spring rises naturally from 106 m down at 43 °C. Day bathing costs ¥700, and it is closed on Wednesdays58.
  • Ikutahara Onsen Hotel North King (ホテルノースキング). Beside JR Ikutahara Station, with hot-spring baths and a radium stone bath5960. Its name comes from the prewar Kita-no-Ō ("North King") gold mine nearby5.
  • Maure Sansō (マウレ山荘). A forest spa hotel in Kami-Muri, Maruseppu, renovated in 2018. Its day-use bath, Pokke no Yu (opened September 2019), has a wood-fired Finnish sauna. It is open 12:00–18:00 and costs ¥6006162.
  • Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko (やまびこ). Day baths next to Ikoi no Mori, open 29 April – 18 October in 2026 and closed in winter. Admission is ¥600. Its restaurant is called Onsen Rāmen63.

Museums & heritage

  • Engaru Town Buried Cultural Property Center (遠軽町埋蔵文化財センター). Upstairs in the Shirataki branch office, Shirataki 138-1. It holds the National Treasure obsidian tools, and you can touch a real mammoth tusk. Anyone can make an obsidian knife with an antler hammer, with no booking needed. Hours are 9:00–17:00; admission is ¥320 for adults1011. Since April 2026 it has closed on Tuesdays64.
  • Shirataki Geopark Exchange Center. Downstairs in the same building. Entry is free, and it has a two-screen film theater on how the obsidian formed53.
  • Chacha World (ちゃちゃワールド). Wooden-toy museum at Ikutahara 143-4, opened 28 April 19985. About 10,000 toys from around 40 countries. It also has the "Zepetto" woodworking studio and the Korobokkuru Shadow-Picture Museum of Seiji Fujishiro's work19.
  • Maruseppu Insect Museum (丸瀬布昆虫生態館). A greenhouse where Okinawan butterflies fly all year, plus live beetles from around the world. Admission is ¥420 for adults, and it closes on Tuesdays65. The area is known for its rare insects, especially the poplar admiral butterfly65.
  • Other museums and heritage sites.
    • Maruseppu Local History Museum: forestry and the Amamiya railway, open late April to late October66.
    • Mokurakukan (木楽館, Minami-machi 3-chōme): petrified wood, local woodcraft and a woodworking room. It also houses the tourism association4367.
    • Mokugeikan (木芸館): wood crafts, a self-playing piano and Yamaha piano parts. It was part of the old Maruseppu roadside station and was due to close after 31 March 2026, so check before going6869.

Outdoor & seasonal activities

  • Maruseppu Forest Park Ikoi no Mori (いこいの森). Entry is free. The 2026 season runs 29 April – 18 October70.
    • The Amamiya No. 21 runs on a 2 km figure-eight track, about every 30 minutes between 10:00 and 16:30 on scheduled days. Fares are ¥800, and ¥400 for children aged 4 and over15.
    • The park also has go-karts, novelty bicycles and an auto campground that is booked online7071.
  • Shirataki Kogen Campground (白滝高原キャンプ場). Open 1 June – 30 September. It has 15 larch bungalows, auto sites and a goemon-buro bath that you heat yourself with firewood72.
  • Obsidian Geo Tours. Guided tours in July–September to the huge obsidian face at the Hachigōsawa outcrop or to the summit of Akaishi-yama. All include a visit to the National Treasure31.
  • Engaru Rock Valley Ski Area (えんがるロックバレースキー場). Beside Engaru IC. It has six runs, including a 33° "Champion" course and a run over 1,000 m, and is open 9:00–21:00. A one-day pair-lift pass costs ¥3,90073. The roadside-station listing gives the ski hours as 9:00–20:0016. In summer it becomes a zipline and tree-trekking park (see Roadside stations).

Food experiences

  • Asparagus fair. Order the summer asparagus dishes during the fair (late July – mid-August)36.
  • Eating in central Engaru. The tourism association says the town has many restaurants and bars because the expressway ends here and traffic in every direction passes through74.
  • Toretatte. A farm restaurant at Ezura Farm (江面ファーム) in Shirataki60. The farm is said to be the model for the farm in the Naoki Prize story27.

Engaru Mori no Okhotsk (道の駅遠軽 森のオホーツク)

  • Location: Nogami 150-1, Engaru. It is on National Route 450 (Asahikawa–Monbetsu Expressway) at Engaru IC, at the foot of the Rock Valley ski slope1673. JR Engaru Station is 15 minutes away by taxi, or you can take the town bus (Engaru–Maruseppu line) from the Kitami Bus Engaru terminal75.
  • Hours: as of September 2026; check before visiting.
    • Main building: 9:00–18:00, open all year16.
    • ENGARU TERRACE food court: side dishes 9:00–17:00. Curry rice and udon on weekdays 10:00–15:00, and on weekends and holidays 10:00–14:00. It closes on some days without a fixed schedule76.
    • Carbonated foot bath: 9:00–18:0016.
    • Dog run: 9:00–18:00 or until sunset, closed in winter16.
    • Ski area: mid-December to late March16.
  • Shops & products: The shop, select・forêt (9:00–18:00), sells:
    • Shirataki Potato Lager.
    • Hakuyōsha's tako-meshi (octopus rice) base and Okhotsk Jibie venison.
    • Obsidian-themed items: black "obsidian curry", black National Treasure gummies, black Geo Ice and obsidian mugs.
    • Takara-kun magnets and other National Treasure goods.
    • Pumpkin pie, salt-bean-paste pie "Yuki no Sei" and thin-skinned salt manjū9.

    • ENGARU TERRACE serves curry, udon and soft-serve7616.
    • Sally Caffè (9:00–17:00, open all year) serves Massaman curry, its own pork curry, gai yang (Thai grilled chicken), gapao rice and sandwiches78.

    • Zipline "Mori no OWL": 1,135 m long, up to 70 km/h, ¥4,500. Riders must be elementary-school age or older and weigh 25–110 kg. It runs from Golden Week to the end of October and is closed Monday–Wednesday81.
    • Tree trekking: a 400 m course with 29 obstacles for ¥3,000, or a kids' course. Weekends and holidays only82.
    • Summit terrace: a 15-minute pair-lift ride with views to the Sea of Okhotsk, ¥1,000 return83.
    • Summer slope (サマーゲレンデ), opened in 20216.
  • Notes:
    • Registered on 19 June 2019 (No. 125) and opened on 22 December 2019. The stamp is available 24 hours1675.
    • Obsidian tools from the Shirataki sites have been on display here since at least May 202411.
    • The Payfuru on-site furusato nozei scheme covers activity tickets (zipline, tree trekking and summer slope)3484.
    • With 799,382 visitors in FY2024, it is the town's busiest facility1.

Shirataki (道の駅しらたき)

  • Location: Oku-Shirataki, Engaru. It is at the Shirataki Parking Area on National Route 450 (Asahikawa–Monbetsu Expressway) next to Oku-Shirataki IC, and can also be reached from National Route 33339. Set among the Kita-Taisetsu mountains, it serves as a gateway to the Okhotsk region39.
  • Hours: as of September 2026; check before visiting.
    • Shop: 9:00–17:00.
    • Restaurant: 9:00–17:00 from late April to 31 October, and 11:00–16:00 from 1 November to late April. Closed on Mondays (on Tuesday when Monday is a holiday).
    • The whole station closes 31 December – 3 January3985.
    • It closed temporarily on several days in 2026, including 6 September39.
  • Shops & products: Local produce, ham and sausage, canned wild mountain vegetables, dried flowers and obsidian crafts39.
  • Food: Soba, ramen and rice dishes. The restaurant is known for curry topped with venison sausage. The soft-serve is made with 100% local milk3985.
  • Facilities:
    • Parking: 25 cars and 9 large vehicles39.
    • Toilets and nursing room open 24 hours85.
    • Accessible and ostomate toilets, Wi-Fi and a tourist-information corner39.
  • Notes:
    • Registered on 8 August 2003 (No. 83). The stamp is available 24 hours39.
    • Nearby are Shirataki Kogen Campground, a gateball park with 13 grass courts (which it calls Japan's largest), two 18-hole park-golf courses and the geopark and National Treasure museums39.
    • It had 289,965 visitors in FY20241.

Former station. Michi-no-Eki Maruseppu (まるせっぷ), on Route 333 at Maruseppu Moto-machi 42-2, was registered in 1994. It was known for its woodcraft hall and self-playing grand piano. Its registration was cancelled on 19 December 20252886. In the early 2010s it had about 900,000 visitors a year. After the expressway was extended past it in March 2017, visitor numbers fell sharply69, and by FY2024 it had 119,4151.

Getting there & around

  • Rail. Six JR Sekihoku Main Line stations are in the town: Shirataki (A45), Maruseppu (A48), Setose (A49), Engaru (A50), Ankoku (A51) and Ikutahara (A53)5.
    • Engaru Station is a switchback, so trains reverse direction there87.
    • All trains stop at Engaru. These include two round trips a day of the Limited Express Okhotsk, which takes about 1 hour 55 minutes to Asahikawa and about 3 hours 30 minutes to Sapporo26.
    • Ikuno Station closed in 20216.
    • Visitors from outside the town who arrive by Sekihoku Line and stay overnight can claim a rail subsidy until 31 March 2027 (see Revitalization)35.
  • Expressway and roads. The Asahikawa–Monbetsu Expressway (E39, National Route 450) has five interchanges in the town: Oku-Shirataki (with the Shirataki PA), Shirataki, Maruseppu, Engaru-Setose and Engaru. Engaru is the current end, and an Engaru-Chūō IC is under construction5. National Route 333 (toward Asahikawa and Sapporo) and National Route 242 (toward Kitami and Abashiri) also cross the town87.
  • Driving times. About 3 hours 20 minutes from Sapporo and 1 hour 40 minutes from Asahikawa by expressway75.
  • Buses.
    • Hokkaido Kitami Bus runs from its Engaru terminal: routes within the town, a route to Yubetsu that replaced the Nayoro Main Line, and the "Kōsoku Engaru-gō" highway bus to Sapporo5.
    • Engaru town buses serve Maruseppu and other districts575.
    • Saroma's community bus comes as far as Engaru Kōsei Hospital26.
  • Air.
    • Okhotsk Monbetsu Airport is about 40 minutes away by car. A free shuttle bus runs from the airport to Engaru in about 1 hour 25 minutes8775.
    • Memanbetsu Airport is about 1 hour 30 minutes away by car87.
    • For flights from other major cities, the town suggests Asahikawa Airport87.
  • Getting around. The town is 47 km across, and its sights are in four separate districts, so a car is the practical choice4.

    • June: wisteria at Maruseppu45.
    • July–August: festivals, the asparagus fair and the steam locomotive on most days1536.

  • Seasonal closures.
    • Ikoi no Mori, the steam locomotive and Yamabiko onsen close for the winter from mid-October (19 October in 2026) until late April7063.
    • Shirataki Kogen Campground is open only June–September72.
    • Cosmos garden facilities close in winter13.
  • Closing days. The Shirataki geopark and National Treasure centers and the Maruseppu Insect Museum close on Tuesdays6465. The Engaru Town Local Museum and Mokurakukan close on Mondays5243.
  • Tourist information. The Engaru Tourism Association is at Mokurakukan, Minami-machi 3-chōme (tel. 0158-42-8360)67.
  • Winter. Lows below −20 °C are common, and the town record is −33.8 °C15. Roads to Yamabiko Falls are gated in winter32.
  • Mountains. Mt. Muri's trailheads cannot be reached until the access roads reopen; no date has been set29.
  • Wildlife. Ezo deer and brown bears live in the Kita-Taisetsu forests; the town even sells venison and bear meat as local specialties38. Drive carefully at dawn and dusk, and carry a bear bell on trails.
  • Obsidian outcrops. Visit Akaishi-yama and the Hachigōsawa outcrop only on the official guided tours3153.

Municipal history Engaru Village split from Kami-Yubetsu Village in 1919 and became a town in 1934. Ikutahara (1925) and Maruseppu and Shirataki (both 1946) later split off from it. On 1 October 2005 the four (Engaru, Ikutahara, Maruseppu and Shirataki) merged as equals to form the present Engaru Town56. The merged town covers the same area as the original 1919 village5

Name origin

The name comes from the Ainu Inkarushi (inkar-us-i), "the place where one always looks out." It breaks down as inkar (to look or gaze), us (always or habitually) and i (place)521. The Ainu name referred to the crag now called Ganbōiwa. The town translates it as "a place with a good view"14, and Japanese Wikipedia adds that people are said to have kept watch from the rock5.

The Japanese name dates from 1901. When a new post office opened near the Gakuden farm, a Sapporo postal official named it "Engaru Post Office" after the Ainu name for the rock. Government offices and schools then took up the name, and it became the place name522. No competing etymology was found.

History
  • Paleolithic obsidian workshops. Nine obsidian lava flows erupted at Shirataki about 2.2 million years ago23. From about 30,000 years ago, people there made stone tools from the obsidian12. The Shirataki sites are the type site of the "Yubetsu technique" (湧別技法), a way of making microblades found across Northeast Asia. They were made a national Historic Site in 1989, sites were added in 1997, and the finds became a National Treasure in 202324.
  • Ainu and Edo-era contact. Little is recorded about this inland area before Meiji, apart from the Ainu lookout at Inkarushi (see Ainu heritage). In 1869 it became part of Monbetsu District in Kitami Province, under the Wakayama Domain5.
  • A Christian settlement. In 1896 Protestant graduates of Tohoku Gakuin (in Sendai) formed the Hokkaido Dōshi Kyōikukai (北海道同志教育会). Their aim was to found a Christian university, and they named the land they were given "Gakuden" (学田, "school field"). On 7 May 1897, 30 households from Niigata and Yamagata arrived to settle there. Frost and floods ended the university plan, but the settlers stayed. The Engaru Church, founded in 1902, is still active522.
  • Tondenhei. The town's official chronology, which covers the whole Yubetsu plain, also records 200 tondenhei (farmer-soldier) households, of the 4th and 5th companies of the Yubetsu tondenhei, settling in 189722. Their villages lay downstream, in what became Kami-Yubetsu (now part of Yubetsu), where the place name Heison (兵村) survives25.
  • Other group settlers. In 1912 Morihei Ueshiba led 54 households of the Kishū group from Tanabe in Wakayama to the Shirataki plain5. In 1914 the pastor Kōsuke Tomeoka founded a branch of his Tokyo reformatory in the Shanafuchi district. Today it is the Hokkaido Family School (北海道家庭学校), and the district is named Tomeoka after him225. In 1922 the Osaka baker Masajirō Mizutani set up a mechanized wheat farm in Maruseppu. The Mizutani-chō district there still carries his name5.
  • Railways and timber. The Yubetsu light railway reached Engaru in 191522. When the Sekihoku Line opened in 1932, Engaru became the junction of the Sekihoku and Nayoro Main Lines. Its switchback layout dates from that time26. At Maruseppu, Amamiya locomotives were shipped in as parts and assembled in 1928, and they began hauling logs on the Muri forest railway in 1929. The railway closed in 196315. Mint (hakka) was a major crop from the early years until after the war5.
  • Garrison and decline. In 1951 the town invited a National Police Reserve camp, which became today's JGSDF Engaru garrison (25th Infantry Regiment)5. The Nayoro Main Line closed on 1 May 198926. The population of the present town area fell from 33,330 in 1970 to 19,241 in 20205.
  • Merger and after. The four municipalities merged in 2005. Shirataki Geopark joined the Japanese Geopark network in 2010, the Shirataki finds became Important Cultural Properties in 2011, and the expressway reached Engaru IC in 2019, the year the roadside station opened6.
  • Recent events. The International Obsidian Conference met in Engaru in July 2023, its first meeting in Asia12. In January 2025 Shin Iyohara won the Naoki Prize for Ai o Tsugu Umi (藍を継ぐ海). One of its stories, "Hoshi Otsu Ekitei" (星隕つ駅逓), is set in Shirataki27. Michi-no-Eki Maruseppu lost its registration on 19 December 202528, and a new town hall opened on 21 July 20265. Disasters include heavy rain in 20066 and disaster damage that has closed the roads to the Mt. Muri trailheads29.

Geography & climate

  • Landforms. Engaru takes in the Yubetsu River basin, from the eastern foot of the Kita-Taisetsu (北大雪) mountains downstream5. Its tributaries include the Shiyubetsu, Muri, Maruseppu, Setose, Ikutahara and Shanafuchi rivers4. Most of the town is forest. Each of the four former municipalities has its own town center. The lowest is Engaru, at 74 m above sea level, and the highest is Shirataki, at 357 m5.

  • Mountains. Mt. Muri (武利岳, 1,876 m) is the highest peak in Okhotsk29. Others include Mt. Hirayama (平山, 1,771 m)30, Kitami-Fuji (1,306 m) and Akaishi-yama (赤石山, 1,147 m), which is the main obsidian source531.

  • Ganbōiwa. The crag is 160.8 m above sea level, and its cliff is about 78 m high. It formed about 7 million years ago from underwater andesite lava (hyaloclastite)5.

  • Waterfalls. Yamabiko Falls (山彦の滝) drops 28 m, and you can walk behind it. Rokumei Falls (鹿鳴の滝) is nearby32.

  • Land use. Of the town's 133,245 ha, 7,062 ha are farmland1. Forest covers about 117,000 ha, about 88% of the town (calculated from Hokkaido forestry statistics), and most of it is national forest1.

  • Climate. The climate is humid continental (Dfb). Normals for 1991–2020 at the Engaru station: January averages −8.0 °C and August 19.7 °C. Annual precipitation is 870.6 mm and annual snowfall 531 cm21. Record highs and lows:

    • Hottest: 37.7 °C at Engaru on 26 May 20195.
    • Coldest: −33.8 °C at Ikutahara on 9 February 20205.
    • Deepest snow: 156 cm at Engaru, recorded in January 20045.

    Summers are mostly sunny, with little rainy season or typhoon weather. Winter lows below −20 °C are common, but the snow is lighter and less deep than on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu1.

  • Main industries. Commerce, farming, forestry and wood processing5. In the 2010 Census the largest employers were health and welfare, retail and wholesale, and public service (which includes the JGSDF garrison)5.
  • Farming (2024, JA Enyū figures). Wheat: 777 ha, 3,905 t. Sugar beet: 168 ha, 9,461 t. Potatoes: 74 ha, 2,528 t. Sweet corn: 97 ha, 1,178 t1. Livestock farming is also important. There are 2,747 ha of pasture and 1,000 ha of feed corn, and the town's 3,584 milking cows produced 34,269 t of raw milk. In February 2025 the town had 7,033 dairy cattle and 2,439 beef cattle1. The 2020 farm census counted 115 farm households, down from 178 in 20151.
  • Manufacturing (2020). 24 plants with four or more workers employed 471 people and shipped ¥9.11 billion of goods, mostly food (¥4.12 billion) and wood products (¥1.52 billion)1. Notable plants:
    • Yamaha Music Craft Hokkaido makes wooden parts for Yamaha grand pianos5.
    • Bell Foods' Engaru plant (formerly NK Foods) makes retort foods. NK Foods is credited with the first retort soup curry5.
  • Tourism (FY2024 visitors).
    • Michi-no-Eki Engaru Mori no Okhotsk: 799,382.
    • Michi-no-Eki Shirataki: 289,965.
    • Michi-no-Eki Maruseppu: 119,415.
    • Cosmos garden: 30,834.
    • Maruseppu Ikoi no Mori forest park: 15,553, down from 56,318 in FY2022.
    • Chacha World: 14,383.
    • Ikutahara Onsen Hotel North King: 51,747 day bathers and 7,804 overnight guests1.
  • Population trends. In FY2024 the town had 80 births and 339 deaths, and 206 more people moved out than moved in1. In the 2020 Census, 7,230 residents (about 38%) were 65 or older (calculated)1. In March 2025 most residents (14,299) lived in the Engaru district. Ikutahara had 1,378, Maruseppu 987 and Shirataki only 4491.
  • Revitalization.
    • Furusato nozei donations grew from ¥23.1 million in FY2019 to ¥291.5 million from 15,693 donations in FY202533. Since June 2024 visitors can donate on the spot at the roadside station with the "Payfuru" service, and receive activity tickets as the return gift34.
    • The town promotes the National Treasure, the geopark and the Naoki Prize connection27.
    • To support the JR Sekihoku Line, a council of the town, its business groups and the tourism association pays visitors from outside Engaru ¥2,000 one way (¥4,000 return) if they arrive by Sekihoku Line and stay at a hotel or inn in the town. The scheme runs from 4 June 2026 to 31 March 2027, or until its budget runs out35.

  • Performing arts. The Engaru Ganbō Taiko club plays the town's folk drumming, and its members performed in Bastos, Brazil, for the 50th anniversary of the sister-city tie in 20234751. Yamabiko Taiko drummers play at the Maruseppu wisteria festival44. On 28 July each year, a safety prayer is held at Yamabiko Falls, where the Buddhist deity Narita Fudō is enshrined32.
  • Christian heritage. The Engaru Church of the Church of Christ in Japan is a wooden church built in 1931. It copies the old Sapporo Kita-Ichijō church designed by Yoshiya Tanoue5. The Hokkaido Family School chapel, finished in 1919, is a Hokkaido-designated Tangible Cultural Property5.
  • Museums.
    • Engaru Town Local Museum (遠軽町郷土館), at the foot of Ganbōiwa, holds about 4,400 items, including material on Bastos52.
    • Okhotsk Literature Museum (オホーツク文学館), inside JR Ikutahara Station since 1993, shows about 500 items on literature set in Okhotsk5.

Ainu heritage

The best-documented Ainu site is Ganbōiwa (Inkarushi). It gave the town its name, and local legend says Ainu groups once fought a battle there14. On 7 February 2011 it became part of the national Place of Scenic Beauty "Pirikanoka" (ピリカノカ, "beautiful shape" in Ainu). That designation groups landscapes across Hokkaido that are tied to Ainu stories, prayer sites and language. Ganbōiwa was the first Okhotsk site in the group14. The geopark runs guided walks there on the links between the land, ecology and people53.

Other traces are scattered:

  • Mt. Muri was once called "Pinneshiri" (ピンネシリ), rendered in Japanese as "male mountain" (男山)29.
  • Yamabiko Falls was found in February 1897 by a young Ainu man from Kami-Muri, Kamuikauk Murayama5.
  • Katakana place names such as Ikutara (イクタラ), Setose (セトセ) and Maure-seppu (マウレセップ) were in use until the town renamed its districts in the early 1960s5.

No Ainu cultural facility was found in the town, and little has been published about Ainu life in the area.

Sister & friendship cities
  • Bastos, São Paulo, Brazil: sister city since October 1972, a tie made by the former Engaru Town. Bastos was developed as a Japanese settlement in 1928, and many emigrants from Engaru and the Yubetsu basin settled there. The link began in 1971, when a deputy mayor of Bastos who was related to Engaru's mayor visited the town88515.
  • Moirans-en-Montagne, Jura, France: sister town since May 1998, a tie made by the former Ikutahara Town through wooden toys88.
  • Tanabe (Wakayama) and Kasama (Ibaraki): friendship cities since May 2001, a tie made by the former Shirataki Village with Tanabe and Iwama Town (now part of Kasama). Ayabe (Kyoto) joined in February 2008, when the four places with links to Morihei Ueshiba signed a joint friendship agreement88.
  • The town was also registered as a host town for Ireland for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics6.

Notable people
  • Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969): founder of aikido. He settled in Shirataki from 1912 to 1919. A monument put up by Shirataki Village in 1983 marks the site5.
  • Kōsuke Tomeoka (留岡幸助): pastor who founded the Hokkaido Family School in 19145.
  • Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (b. 1947): Engaru-born animator and manga artist, known for Mobile Suit Gundam521.
  • Tomonori Kogawa (b. 1950): animator (Space Runaway Ideon)21.
  • Tatsuya Hori (1935–2026): Engaru-born Governor of Hokkaido (1995–2003) and an honorary citizen of the town589.
  • Masami Tanaka (b. 1979): swimmer, bronze medalist in the women's medley relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics5.
