Shibetsu 標津町

• Autumn chum salmon (秋鮭). In 1985 Shibetsu first landed more than 10,000 t. That made it Japan's top salmon port, a rank it has held 15 times since⁷.
• Japan Heritage "A Heritage of Salmon – A Journey of Ten Thousand Years" (「鮭の聖地」の物語～根室海峡一万年の道程～, 2020)⁸⁹. Shibetsu shares the listing with Nemuro, Betsukai and Rausu⁸.
• Shibetsu Salmon Museum (標津サーモン科学館). The town tourism association bills it as the aquarium with the most kinds of salmon and trout on show in Japan¹⁰.
• Ichani Karikarius Site (伊茶仁カリカリウス遺跡). A national historic site with 2,549 pit-dwelling hollows, the most at any single site in Japan¹¹.
• Notsuke Peninsula (野付半島) and Kunashir (国後島). The peninsula starts here, and Kunashir Island is in view across the water⁴.
• "Japan's most generous town" (日本一気風のいい町). Every household gets a free salmon each autumn¹².
• Dairy. About 20,000 cows, and the local farm co-op's milk brand, Shibetsu Gyunyu (しべつ牛乳)⁴¹³.
• Melody Road (メロディーロード). Shibetsu is where Japan's first "melody road" was built¹⁴.
• "Most Beautiful Villages in Japan." Shibetsu is a member town of this federation (「日本で最も美しい村」連合)⁷.

Nature & scenery

• Notsuke Peninsula. Ponnoushi Terrace (ポンノウシテラス) has a café, a gallery and canoe tours with a nature guide. Swans, brant geese and red-crowned cranes are sometimes seen. The café closes on Wednesdays³⁴.
• Shibetsu Wetland. A bog inside the Po River park, about a third the size of Oze-ga-hara, with flowers from late May to early July. The park also has more than 80 springs that never freeze, an oak over 500 years old, and glowing moss that is best seen in July¹¹.
• Sea Park (しべつ「海の公園」). A free seaside park with rock pools, a fishing jetty and sunrise views of Kunashir⁴⁵.

Onsen

• Kawakita Onsen (川北温泉). A free outdoor bath in the forest, looked after by volunteers, with milky sulfurous water at 59.6 °C. It is about 5 km up a dirt forest road off Route 244. Snow closes the road until after Golden Week, and brown bears live in the area⁴⁶.
• Hotel Kawabata (標津川温泉ぷるけの館ホテル川畑). An open-air bath fed straight from the spring (kakenagashi). Day bathing runs 14:00–20:00 and costs ¥600⁴⁷.
• Onsen Hotel Kiraku (温泉ホテル喜楽来). Known for its skin-softening "Okhotsk Onsen" water⁴⁸.

Museums & heritage

• Shibetsu Salmon Museum (標津サーモン科学館). Opened in 1991⁴⁹.
  • Its fish-ladder tank shows salmon swimming upstream in September–October, spawning in November, and young fish from February to May¹⁰.
  • Visitors can put a finger in a sturgeon's mouth and look out from an observation room 30 m up⁴⁹.
  • Hours: 9:30–17:00. Closed Wednesdays in February–April and November, and all of December–January. Admission: ¥650⁵⁰.
  • A Japan Heritage room shows old folding-screen paintings of the town⁵¹.
  • From late August to mid-November, you can watch salmon from a bridge over the river⁵².
• Po River Historic Nature Park (ポー川史跡自然公園). A visitor center, a village of rebuilt pioneer-era buildings, a folk museum and the Ichani Karikarius site. Open late April to 23 November. Admission: ¥330⁵³⁴⁴. The park gives its protected area as about 630 ha⁴², while the Most Beautiful Villages federation says 612 ha⁷.
• Northern Territories Museum (北方領土館). A free museum about the Russian-held islands, with a view of Kunashir. Closed Mondays from November to June⁵⁴.
• Other sights:
  • the Aizu samurai graves¹⁷;
  • the Shibetsu Station turntable and remains of wartime aircraft shelters at the Kawakita naval air base⁶;
  • the Melody Road in Kawakita, which plays "Shiretoko Ryojo" when driven over at a steady legal speed¹⁴⁶.

Outdoor & seasonal activities

• Churui River salmon angling (忠類川サーモンフィッシング). This research-permit program led the way for public salmon angling in Japan⁵⁵⁵⁶.
  • Every season from 2020 to 2025 was cancelled. The 2020 season was called off because of COVID-19⁵⁷. The organizers called 2022 the third cancelled season, and the 2025 notice blamed the collapse in autumn salmon stocks⁵⁶²⁰.
  • No 2026 notice was found, so check the website before planning.
• Kanayama Ski Area (町営金山スキー場). The only ski area in the Nemuro region, with an old single-seat chairlift. It opens in January and February. A day pass costs ¥2,300⁵⁸.
• Sea Park Auto Campground. Open 29 April to 31 October, with bungalows, powered auto sites, tent sites and fishing-gear rental⁵⁹.
• Guided tours. Canoe trips on the Po River, and town walks⁶⁰.

Food experiences

• Seafood. Salmon shabu-shabu and ikura bowls at Kyodo Ryori Takeda (郷土料理武田)⁶¹. Soba with local seafood at Fukuzumi Sohonten (そば処福住総本店), the head shop of a soba business founded more than 70 years ago⁶².
• Ramen. Ramen Land (らーめんランド) is known for very spicy ramen⁶³.
• From the boats. Guesthouse Shiome (ゲストハウス潮目) is run by fishermen⁶⁴, and Hashinkai (波心会) sells their catch direct³⁰.

No Michi-no-Eki is located in Shibetsu. The official Hokkaido list has none in Shibetsu or in neighboring Nakashibetsu. The similarly named Hitsuji no Machi Samurai Shibetsu (道の駅 羊のまち 侍・しべつ) is in Shibetsu city (士別市), Kamikawa, not in this town⁶⁵. In town, the closest thing is the Machi-no-Eki Shibetsu Salmon Plaza (まちの駅 標津サーモンプラザ), next to the Salmon Museum. It was built to house a restaurant, a souvenir shop, a tourist-information corner and a soft-serve and takeout stand⁵²⁶⁶. The town was recruiting new tenants in March 2026, so check what is open⁶⁶.

The nearest Michi-no-Eki:

• Odaito (道の駅おだいとう), Betsukai. Odaito 5-27, on Route 244 south of town⁶⁵²¹.
  • Hours: 9:00–17:00 (May–October) and 9:00–16:00 (November–April). Closed 31 December–5 January. As of September 2026; check before visiting²¹.
  • Features: the Betsukai Northern Territories observation tower, views of the Notsuke Peninsula and Kunashir, and a jumbo Notsuke-scallop burger served with a mug of Betsukai milk²¹.
• Shiretoko Rausu (道の駅知床・らうす), Rausu. On Route 335, about 50 minutes' drive north of Salmon Park⁶⁷⁶⁸.
• Shari (道の駅しゃり), Shari. In central Shari, over Konpoku Pass on Route 244. Shari is about 50 minutes' drive from Salmon Park⁶⁵⁶⁶⁸.
• Swan 44 Nemuro (道の駅スワン44ねむろ), Nemuro. Farther south⁶⁵.

• Air. The nearest airport is Nemuro-Nakashibetsu Airport (根室中標津空港). Flights take about 100 minutes from Haneda and about 50 minutes from New Chitose. From the airport it is 20–30 minutes to Shibetsu by car⁶⁹⁷⁰. Memanbetsu and Kushiro airports are about 1 h 45 min and 2 h 20 min away by car⁷⁰.

• Rail. No railway runs in Shibetsu. The nearest JR station is Shiretoko-Shari on the Senmo Line⁶. From JR Kushiro Station the bus takes about 2 hours⁷.

• Bus. Akan Bus runs two routes:

  • the Kushiro–Nakashibetsu–Shibetsu–Rausu line (釧路羅臼線・釧路標津線);
  • the Shibetsu–Kawakita–Nakashibetsu–Nishi-Shunbetsu line (標津西春別線)⁷¹.

  Buses are infrequent. The stop for the museum is Salmon Park Iriguchi (サーモンパーク入口)⁶⁸.

• Roads. Route 272 runs from Kushiro and ends in Shibetsu⁷². Route 335 runs from Rausu and also ends here⁷³. Route 244, which links Abashiri and Shari with Nemuro, follows the coast toward Betsukai and crosses Konpoku Pass (根北峠) to Shari⁷⁴⁶⁵⁴.

• Driving times. About 5 h 30 min from Sapporo, about 2 hours from Kushiro, about 1 h 35 min from Nemuro, and about 1 h 20 min from Lake Mashu⁷⁰.

• When to go. Visitor numbers peak in August²⁸. Good times to visit:
  • September–October for the salmon run and the Akiaji Festival⁵²²⁷;
  • late May to July for wetland flowers at the Po River park¹¹;
  • early August for Mizu Kirari⁴⁰.
• Winter closures. Many places shut in winter:
  • the Po River park closes from 24 November to 28 April⁵³;
  • the Salmon Museum closes in December and January⁵⁰;
  • the road to Kawakita Onsen is snowbound until about May⁴⁶.
• Visitor information. Minami-Shiretoko Shibetsu Tourism Association (南知床標津町観光協会), Minami 3-jo Nishi 1-chome 1-6, tel. 0153-85-7226⁶⁰²⁷. Several shops close on Sundays³³³⁶³⁷.
• Brown bears. The town posts a bear-sighting map on its website². In 1962 a bear killed two people in Kotanuka¹⁸. Treat forest roads, Kawakita Onsen and riverbanks as bear country⁴⁶.
• Weather. Fog is common in summer, and winter lows around −20 °C are not unusual⁵⁶.
