Muroran 室蘭市

Muroran is a steel and port city built around a horseshoe of land between Uchiura Bay (内浦湾, also called Volcano Bay, 噴火湾) and the Pacific.1 Blast furnaces, a harbor ringed by factories and the 1,380 m Hakucho Bridge2 sit beside 100 m sea cliffs3 whose Ainu names are protected as a national Place of Scenic Beauty.4 The city is also home to pork "yakitori" served with mustard,5 and to curry ramen.6

Known for

  • "Tetsu no machi" (鉄のまち, the iron town): The city grew around Japan Steel Works (日本製鋼所, founded 1907) and the Wanishi ironworks (輪西製鐵場, begun in 1909 and now part of Nippon Steel).1 Its manufacturing shipments in 2018 were ¥704.4 billion, second in Hokkaido after Tomakomai.19
  • Hakucho Bridge (白鳥大橋): At 1,380 m, this is the largest suspension bridge in eastern Japan. It spans the harbor mouth and opened on 13 June 1998.20221
  • Factory night views (工場夜景): Muroran belongs to the 14-city National Factory Night View Cities Council.22 It hosted the council's summit in 2012.1
  • Chikyu Misaki (地球岬, "Earth Cape"): A headland of cliffs about 100 m high. It ranked first in the "Hokkaido Nature 100 Selections" (北海道の自然100選), and crowds come for the first sunrise on New Year's Day.3
  • Muroran yakitori (室蘭やきとり): Skewers of pork and onion rather than chicken, eaten with Western mustard. In February 2026 the Agency for Cultural Affairs certified the dish as a "100-Year Food" (100年フード), in the "Future 100-Year Food" category (未来の100年フード部門) for food cultures still working toward a century.522
  • Muroran curry ramen (室蘭カレーラーメン): About 60% of the roughly 50 ramen shops in the area serve it.6
  • Dolphin and whale watching: From spring into summer, 18 species of dolphins, whales and fur seals can be seen off the coast.23
  • Japan Heritage "Tanteko" (炭鉄港): This story of coal, steel, ports and railways ties Muroran to Sorachi and Otaru. It was recognized as Japan Heritage on 20 May 2019.24

  • Chikyu Misaki (母恋南町): An observation deck looks out from the cliffs. Chikiu Misaki Lighthouse (チキウ岬灯台) was first lit on 1 April 1920 and stands about 130 m above the sea. It is an unusual all-white lighthouse, and it opens to the public on Marine Day.3 Parking has cost ¥500 per car since 1 April 2026.64 From the Chikyu-misaki Danchi bus stop it is a 15-minute walk.3 About 700 hydrangea plants line the approach road.14
  • Tokkarisho: Cliffs about 100 m high, carpeted in dwarf bamboo above a blue sea.65 Kin-byōbu glows gold in the morning. Gin-byōbu shines silver at sunset, and both are best seen from a boat.60
  • Sokuryō-zan (199.6 m): A 360° view that reaches Mount Yōtei and Komagatake.66 The TV towers on the summit have been lit every night since 1988, each night with a message sponsored by a citizen. They stay lit until midnight, or 23:00 from October to March.66 The name comes from the American engineer Warfield, who climbed the hill in 1872 to plan the Sapporo Hondō road.66
  • Etomo Misaki (絵鞆町2丁目): A deck shaped like a ship's bow looks over Uchiura Bay to Usu-zan, Shōwa-shinzan and Yōtei.28
  • Itanki Beach (東町3丁目): Singing sand that contains high-temperature quartz crystals nicknamed "angel's tears." It is about a 25-minute walk from Higashi-Muroran Station.41

Onsen

  • Muroran Onsen Yurara (むろらん温泉ゆらら, 絵鞆町4-2-17): Near Mitara, with an outdoor bath, sauna and family baths. Hours are 11:00–22:00 (last entry 21:20), closed on the third Thursday. Adults pay ¥700.67 The address is 4-2-17 Etomo-chō, and there is parking for 90 cars.68 The facility also has a large rest hall that looks out over the bay and Hakucho Bridge.20

Museums & heritage

  • Muroran Minpō Minna no Suizokukan (市立室蘭水族館): Hokkaido's oldest aquarium, opened in June 1953 on the site of a former whaling station. It has about 120 species, and its penguins parade across a mini Hakucho Bridge. It is open from late April to mid-October, 9:30–16:30. Admission is ¥400 for adults.69
  • Nanbu domain Mororan garrison site (陣屋町): Muroran's only National Historic Site, designated in 1934, with earthworks, a moat and the graves of the domain's soldiers.31 The Tonten-kan museum next door is open 10:00–16:00. It is closed on Mondays, the day after public holidays, over the New Year and from 20 January to 19 March.56
  • Old Muroran Station building (海岸町1-5-1): Houses the tourism association. It is open 8:00–19:00 from April to October and 8:00–17:00 from November to March, and entry is free.56 The D51-560 steam locomotive was moved beside it in 2019.36

Outdoor & seasonal activities

  • Star Marine cruises (スターマリン):
    • a Hakucho Bridge tower-climb cruise that goes by boat to a 140 m tower and up to a 100 m viewpoint70
    • dolphin and whale watching in spring and summer, with pods of 500–1,000 Pacific white-sided dolphins and occasional orcas23
    • a night cruise under the lit bridge at sunset71
  • Night views: Good viewpoints include the Hakucho Bridge observatory, Shukutsu Park observatory, Sokuryō-zan and Shiomi Park. The bridge's lights run on wind power from sunset to midnight.2 Hakucho Bridge was named a Japan Night View Heritage and Light-up Heritage site in 2008.2
  • Fishing: Muroran calls itself a "rock-fish sanctuary," where greenling and rockfish bite year-round. A guided "Muroran de Tebura Fishing" package covers the boat, gear, a bath and having your catch cooked. It runs April–October. The price depends on group size, from ¥11,600 per person for a full boat of ten on the afternoon trip. The tourism site still shows an old suspension notice, so check that it is operating before booking.72
  • Danpara Park (だんパラ公園, 神代町): A park at the foot of Muroran-dake with a campground, lodge, sports grounds and a beginner-to-intermediate ski area.73

Food experiences

  • Yakitori crawl: Yakitori Yoshidaya, Yakitori no Ippei main store, Kishiya, Konjaku and other shops.5
  • Curry ramen: Aji no Daiō, Shibukiya, Rantantei and other shops. Kobune serves both local classics at lunch.6
  • Mitara's "Muroran set": Yakitori plus curry ramen in a single meal at the Michi-no-Eki.74

Roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki)

Mitara Muroran (道の駅みたら室蘭)

  • Location: 4-16-15 Shukutsu-chō (祝津町), on National Route 37 (the Hakuchō Shindō, 白鳥新道).20 It is about two minutes by car from Hakucho Bridge. Coming from Doo Expressway Muroran IC, cross the bridge and turn right at the first junction, about 10–15 minutes in all.207574 Donan Bus stops right outside at "Mitara/Suizokukan-mae."75 The building is the Hakucho Bridge Memorial Hall (白鳥大橋記念館). Under a naming-rights deal running from June 2023 to May 2028 it is branded "Kanasteel Mitara Muroran" (カナスチールみたら室蘭).76
  • Hours (as of September 2026, check before visiting):
    • April–October: 9:30–19:00, open daily77
    • November–March: 9:30–17:00, closed Thursdays (Friday if Thursday is a holiday). It is closed 31 December–1 January, but opens every day on 30 December and 2–7 January.77
    • Shop and café: 9:30–18:00 in summer and 9:30–17:00 in winter.77
    • Restaurant tenants: 10:00–15:00 on weekdays. On weekends and holidays they are open 10:00–17:00 from 18 April to 31 October 2026 and 10:00–16:00 in winter. They close from 28 December to 3 January.227720
    • The 24-hour toilets and the parking stay open even when the building is closed.22
  • Shops & products: The souvenir shop was greatly enlarged in the 2019 renovation. It sells:2018

  • Food: The lounge has four outlets, with views of the bridge, wind turbine, marina and Daikoku Island.20
    • Café: Hokkaido soft serve (vanilla, matcha or mixed, ¥450). "Uzuran" soft serve made with Muroran quail eggs and Muroran milk (¥450). Uzuran parfait (¥680), quail-egg ice cream (¥370) and quail pudding (¥590).7879
    • Kujira Shokudō (くじら食堂): Set meals and a yakitori bento of Hokkaido pork shoulder and Kitami onions with house sauce.79 It also serves the "Muroran set" of yakitori and curry ramen.74
    • Tetsu no Machi Coffee (鉄ノ街珈琲): A coffee stand serving caramel macchiato and other espresso drinks.20
    • Tori Zanmai (鶏ざんまい): Karaage fried chicken.20
  • Facilities:

    • EV charging: the Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki site shows an EV-charger icon, but the national registry does not, so confirm before relying on it.2079
    • There is no campground or RV park on site. Muroran Onsen Yurara is nearby.20
  • Notes:
    • Registered on 17 April 1998 as Hokkaido registration No. 47 (the national 14th round).2079 The memorial hall opened that April, two months before the bridge.35
    • There are two stamp stations, one of them usable 24 hours.20
    • Exhibits include a full-size cross-section of the main cable (47 cm across, 1,620 m long, made of 52 strands of 127 wires each) and wind-tunnel models. The models show the deck is safe in winds of 67 m/s.80
    • The tower-climb and fishing tours leave from a pier nearby.7072
  • Other Michi-no-Eki nearby are Date Rekishi no Mori (道の駅だて歴史の杜) in neighboring Date, Sōbetsu Jōhōkan i (道の駅そうべつ情報館i) in Sobetsu and Abuta (道の駅あぷた) in Toyako. There is none in Noboribetsu.81

Getting there & around

  • Rail: JR Hokkaido's Muroran Main Line serves Sakimori, Moto-Wanishi and Higashi-Muroran. A branch runs on from Higashi-Muroran to Wanishi, Misaki, Bokoi and Muroran.1 Higashi-Muroran (東室蘭) is the main station. Every passenger train stops there, including the limited expresses Hokuto and Suzuran. The fastest trip from Sapporo takes 1 h 17 min. Hokuto makes 11 round trips a day and reaches Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, for the Hokkaido Shinkansen, in 1 h 57 min at best.82 The tourism association gives about 1 h 30 min from Sapporo to Muroran, about 1 hour from Minami-Chitose and about 2 h 30 min from Hakodate to Higashi-Muroran.83 Muroran Station has been unstaffed since 1 October 2024.26

  • 2026 disruption: Heavy rain on 27 August 2026 washed out the Muroran Line between Shizukari and Koboro (小幌), on the Hakodate side of the line outside the city. Service resumed on 10 September, with slow running and delays of about 10 minutes for limited expresses and local trains.8485

  • Bus: Donan Bus (道南バス) expressway buses:83

    • Hakuchō (高速白鳥号): Sapporo Station to Higashimachi Bus Terminal, about 2 hours
    • Hayabusa (高速はやぶさ号): New Chitose Airport, about 1 h 30 min

    Local Donan Bus routes cover the city and run out to Noboribetsu Onsen, Date, Tōya-ko Onsen and Toyoura.1

  • Road: Doo Expressway Muroran IC opened in 1991. Noboribetsu-Muroran IC is just over the border in Noboribetsu.1 National Route 36 runs through the city as the Muroran Shindō (室蘭新道) motorway section, and Route 37 crosses Hakucho Bridge as the Hakuchō Shindō.1 Approximate drive times:83

    • Sapporo: about 2 hours
    • New Chitose Airport: about 1 hour
    • Noboribetsu Onsen: about 45 min
    • Tōya-ko Onsen: about 45 min
    • Hakodate: about 2 h 45 min

  • Ferry: Tsugaru Kaikyō Ferry runs to Aomori (205 km) every day. Departures leave Muroran at 20:50 and arrive at 03:50, and return from Aomori at 10:40 to arrive at 17:25. The terminal is at 1-50 Irie-chō, and its car park is for drop-off only.37 The new vessel Blue Grace entered service on 8 August 2025, and the operator's September 2026 timetable still lists it on the same times.3786

  • Air: New Chitose Airport, about an hour away by car or 1 h 30 min by the Hayabusa bus.83

  • Getting around: Buses bound for Etomo Danchi (絵鞆団地) from Muroran Station serve Mitara and the aquarium.69 For Chikyu Misaki, take the bus to Chikyu-misaki Danchi, or a taxi from Bokoi Station (about 10 minutes).3 Rental cars are available near Higashi-Muroran Station.83

  • Fog: Summer fog is common, especially at Chikyu Misaki. July averages 9.3 fog days.4214 Keep a backup plan for cliff views, or go early.
  • Chikyu Misaki parking: Paid since April 2026: ¥200 for motorcycles, ¥500 for cars and ¥2,000 for buses. Muroran residents park free after verifying at the machine.64
  • Tourist information: The Muroran Tourism Association is in the Old Muroran Station building at 1-5-1 Kaigan-chō, tel. 0143-23-0102. Its website, "Otto! Muroran" (おっと！むろらん), lists shops and events.5683
  • Winter: Snowfall averages only 157 cm, which is light for Hokkaido, but winds are strong. The record gust is 55.0 m/s.4243 The tourism association calls Muroran a town of many slopes, so take care on icy streets.25
  • Wildlife: The city's first brown-bear advisory ran from 13 May to 12 June 2023. Make noise on trails such as those on Muroran-dake.1
  • Where to stay: Hotels cluster around Muroran Station and Higashi-Muroran Station. The Dormy Inn Higashi-Muroran has a natural hot spring, and Muroran Youth Hostel is near Wanishi.87

Population 82,383 at the 2020 Census. The preliminary 2025 Census count was 74,019, down 8,364 (−10.2%). That was the sixth-largest numerical fall among Hokkaido's municipalities.7 The resident register showed 72,171 people (34,799 men, 37,372 women) in 42,323 households at the end of August 2026.8 The Hokkaido Government's register figure for 1 January 2026 was 73,201.9 The Census peak was 162,059 in 1970. The highest year-end (30 September) register figure was 183,125 in 1969.10 Japanese Wikipedia gives a monthly register peak of 183,605 in July 1969.1

Neighboring municipalities Noboribetsu and Date, both in Iburi.1 The Washibetsu River (鷲別川) forms part of the border with Noboribetsu.14
Symbols Tree: Japanese rowan (ナナカマド). Flower: azalea (ツツジ). Bird: coal tit (ヒガラ). All three were chosen in 1972 for the port's centenary and the city's 50th year. Fish: black rockfish (クロソイ), chosen in 2002.15 Emblem (1936): six katakana ロ in a ring spell "Muro" around an orchid (蘭) flower.13
Mascot Kujiran (くじらん) is the official city mascot. Its design was chosen by public contest in March 1991.16 Ran Umi (蘭うみ) is the "tourism support character" who voices the audio guides installed at six sites, including Chikyu Misaki, from May to October 2026.17 Unofficial favorites are Bolta (ボルタ), a figure made of bolts and nuts, and Muroran-kun (むろらんくん), an "unofficial city character" with its own goods.18

Name origin
  • Mo-ruerani (モ・ルエラニ): The city's official explanation is Ainu mo-ruerani, "small downhill path" (小さな・下り路). The source of the name is placed near Senkai-ji temple (仙海寺) in Sakimori-chō (崎守町).13 The tourism association adds that the name suits a bowl-shaped town full of slopes.25
  • Scholarly reading: Place-name scholar Yamada Hidezō parsed it as mo-ru-e-ran-i, "small, path, there, descend, place," meaning a small slope. The Ainu word ruerani (slope) was often shortened to ran or ruran, which gives Moruran.1
  • The name moved: "Mororan" first meant the old harbor at today's Sakimori. In 1871 the port moved to the site of the present downtown, then called Tokkarimoi (from tukar-moy, "seal bay"), and the name moved with it.1
  • Mororan to Muroran: Until about the middle of the Meiji era the kanji 室蘭 were read "Mororan." The reading later shifted to "Muroran" under the pull of the characters' usual sounds.1 When the first Muroran Station opened in 1892, its name was still read "Mororan."26 The 1936 emblem still plays on the kanji, pairing ムロ (Muro) with an orchid (蘭, ran).13

History
  • Prehistory: The city has 37 registered archaeological sites.27 A clay figurine (dogū) from the Moto-Wanishi site (本輪西遺跡) is a national Important Cultural Property held by the Tokyo National Museum. A replica is at the city folk museum.1 The tourism association says the Etomo headland was the first place people settled in the Muroran area. Remains dated to 6,000–7,000 years ago were excavated at a site there known as Enrum Chasi (エンルム・チャシ).28 A large site was also found at Masuichi Beach in 1959.29
  • Edo period: In the Keichō era, around 1600, the Matsumae domain opened the Etomo trading post (絵鞆場所) with a trading house (運上屋) for commerce with the Ainu.13 The wider district was known as the Mororan trading post.1
  • HMS Providence (1796): On 28 September 1796, Captain William Robert Broughton's HMS Providence entered the harbor. Broughton exchanged maps with the Matsumae physician Katō Kengo. A Danish sailor, Hans Olson, died in an accident and was buried on Daikoku Island (大黒島). Broughton also named Volcano Bay. The ship was wrecked off Miyako Island in 1797, and that shared history later led to the exchange tie with Miyakojima.30
  • Nanbu garrison (1856): The shogunate ordered the Nanbu domain to guard the coast. After an 1855 survey that included Nitobe Jūjirō, father of Nitobe Inazō, the domain finished the Mororan outpost (モロラン陣屋) in September 1856. It had gun batteries at Sakimori and Etomo. In 1868 the garrison reportedly burned the post rather than hand it over to the new government, then went home.31
  • Meiji settlement: In 1870, 44 households (51 people) arrived from Kakuda, a fief of the former Sendai domain. They were retainers of its lord, Ishikawa Kunimitsu, and included Soeda Ryūkichi and his brother Izumi Rintarō.1 Their swords and surcoats are city-designated cultural properties.32 In 1887 and 1889, two contingents of tondenhei (soldier-farmer) settlers, 110 households each, settled at Wanishi (輪西).1 Their home prefectures are not stated in the sources consulted. Settlers from Kagawa Prefecture arrived in 1892 and brought the lion dance (御供獅子舞) that is still performed in Kagawa-chō.32
  • Port and railway: A customs office opened at Moto-Muroran (now Sakimori) in 1872, which counts as the opening of the port. Work on the Sapporo Hondō road (札幌本道) linking Hakodate, Mori, Muroran and Sapporo began in earnest the same year.1321 The Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company (北海道炭礦鉄道) opened the Wanishi–Iwamizawa line in 1892, and Muroran became the export port for Sorachi coal.124 It was made a special export port in 1894 and an open port in 1899.121
  • Steel town: Japan Steel Works was founded in 1907 as an Anglo-Japanese joint venture of three companies. The Hokutan Wanishi ironworks began operating in 1909.1 In 1918 Japan Steel Works finished the first aircraft engine made in Japan.32 Muroran became a town in 1900, a ward in 1918 and a city on 1 August 1922.1
  • War and recovery: US air raids and naval gunfire hit the city in July 1945.33 The first "Recovery" Port Festival was held in 1947, and Muroran Institute of Technology was founded in 1949.3334 In 1961 Fuji Steel completed its No. 4 blast furnace here, then the largest in Japan. In 1965 Muroran became the first port in Hokkaido or Tōhoku to be named a Specially Designated Major Port.331
  • Peak and decline: The resident register peaked in 1969, at just over 183,000.101 The last steam-hauled passenger trains in Japan ran between Muroran and Iwamizawa in 1975.1 Major rationalization at the steel companies, moves to cheaper housing in Noboribetsu and Date, and the rise of Tomakomai pulled the population down. Tomakomai overtook Muroran in 1980.1 The register fell below 150,000 in 1984, below 100,000 in 2005 and below 90,000 in 2014.3335
  • New directions: Hakucho Bridge opened in June 1998.35 The "Tanteko" Japan Heritage recognition followed in May 2019.24 In November 2020 Nippon Steel started an AI-equipped No. 2 blast furnace.36 Muroran marked the port's 150th year and the city's centenary in July 2022.36 Ferries have come and gone. After the Aomori route closed in 2008, a Miyako route ran from 2018 to 2020 and a Hachinohe route from 2020 to 2022. A daily Muroran–Aomori service began on 2 October 2023.2137 The city also formed a decarbonization council with industry in 2021.38 In 2023 the harbor became the home port of Shimizu Corporation's offshore-wind installation vessel.39
  • Hazards: In November 2012 a windstorm toppled power-line towers and caused a large blackout across the Muroran area.1 On 13 May 2023 the city received its first brown-bear advisory, which was lifted on 12 June.1

Geography & climate

  • Landforms: The city spreads across the Etomo Peninsula (絵鞆半島) and the sandbar at its base. With sea on three sides, it forms a horseshoe. The peninsula wraps around Muroran Port, also called Hakuchō Bay (白鳥湾), a natural harbor. Hakucho Bridge lets drivers loop right around it. Most of the flat land is industrial, and older neighborhoods climb the valleys. The outer Pacific coast is a line of cliffs about 14 km long.1

  • Peaks: Washibetsu-dake (鷲別岳, also called Muroran-dake 室蘭岳, 911.0 m), Tenjin-yama (211.9 m), Sokuryō-zan (測量山, 199.6 m) and Bokoi-Fuji (母恋富士, 141 m).1

  • Rivers: The Washibetsu, Chiribetsu (知利別川) and Chimaibetsu. Islands: Daikoku Island, about 700 m around and 2.4 ha in area, and Ebisu Island.140

  • Protected landscapes: The outer coast of the Etomo Peninsula was designated the national Place of Scenic Beauty "Pirikanoka" on 24 January 2012.4 Itanki Beach (イタンキ浜) was confirmed in 1986 as Hokkaido's first "singing sand" beach, where the sand squeaks underfoot.41 It is listed among Japan's 100 Best Beaches (日本の渚百選).1 No national or quasi-national park covering the city was found in the sources consulted.

  • Climate: Japanese Wikipedia classes the climate as oceanic (Köppen Cfb), and the city is still designated a heavy-snow area.1 JMA normals for 1991–2020 at the Muroran observatory are:

    • annual mean temperature 8.9 °C
    • January mean −1.8 °C
    • August mean 20.6 °C, with an average daily high of 23.6 °C
    • annual precipitation 1,188.9 mm
    • annual snowfall 157 cm
    • 1,728.1 hours of sunshine a year
    • 36.7 days of fog a year, 9.3 of them in July42

    The record high is 32.8 °C (8 August 1929), and 24 July 2025 came close at 32.7 °C. The record low of −13.4 °C was reached on 8 February 1931 and again on 12 January 1961. The deepest snow was 68 cm (13 February 1958). The strongest gust was 55.0 m/s (26 September 1954).43

Economy & industry
  • Manufacturing: In June 2019, Muroran had 123 manufacturing establishments (four or more employees) with 7,032 workers. Their shipments for 2018 were ¥704.4 billion, second in Hokkaido after Tomakomai's ¥1,304.1 billion.19 Iron and steel dominates. In the city statistics book's 2016 column, the sector had 20 establishments, 4,002 workers and ¥401.8 billion of the ¥774.0 billion total.19 The FY2004 industrial statistics survey, reported in 2006, ranked the city's shipments first in Hokkaido for the first time in 21 years.35

  • Port: Muroran Port is an International Hub Port with a harbor area of 1,610 ha and 109 berths, the most in Hokkaido.1 It was named a recycling port in 2002 and receives cruise ships and training ships.211
  • Energy transition: The Muroran Decarbonized Society Creation Council (室蘭脱炭素社会創造協議会) was formed on 31 May 2021. Its 40-plus members (as of June 2022) include steelmakers, utilities, shipping lines and Muroran Institute of Technology. Its first-year report estimated local hydrogen supply and demand.38 Since April 2023 the port has been home base for Shimizu Corporation's self-propelled SEP vessel, one of the world's largest, under a five-year agreement.39
  • Fisheries: Oinaoshi Fishing Port (追直漁港) on the outer coast is a Class 3 fishing port. It supports trawling and aquaculture. An offshore artificial island, "M-Land," opened off the port in 2013.1 The 2019 catch was 13,227 t worth ¥2.51 billion. The 2018 fishery census counted 49 fishing enterprises.44
  • Farming: Farming is minor, with 23 farm households in 2015. There were 274 dairy cows on three farms.44 Muroran Uzura-en (室蘭うずら園) in Ishikawa-chō supplies 100% of Hokkaido's fresh quail eggs.45
  • Tourism: In FY2023, 1,411,400 people visited, of whom 519,700 came from outside Hokkaido. There were 236,400 overnight visitors and 369,600 guest-nights.46
  • Population trend: The population fell 10.2% between the 2020 and 2025 censuses.7 In 2026 about 72,000 people live in a city that once passed 180,000.810

Muroran yakitori (室蘭やきとり) Signature dish Pork and onion grilled over charcoal with each shop's own sauce, served with Western mustard. The style began around 1933 at street stalls in Wanishi, where pork was cheaper than chicken and Hokkaido onions cheaper than leeks.5 The National Yakitori Liaison Council counts it among Japan's "seven great regional yakitori."1 It was certified a 100-Year Food in 2026.22 Long-running shops include Yakitori Yoshidaya (founded 1946) and Yakitori no Ippei main store (founded 1950).5
Muroran curry ramen (室蘭カレーラーメン) Ramen A thick, spicy curry soup with Hokkaido-style curly noodles, char siu, vegetables and wakame. It has been on local ramen-shop menus for more than 30 years. The Muroran Curry Ramen Association (室蘭カレーラーメンの会, founded 2006) promotes it as Hokkaido's "fourth ramen flavor." Aji no Daiō Muroran main shop (味の大王 室蘭本店) is billed as its birthplace.6 Packaged versions are sold at Mitara.18
Black rockfish (クロソイ) Seafood The city fish since 2002, chosen as a pillar of stock-enhancement fishing. It can also be seen at the aquarium.15 The tourism council presents it with yakitori and curry ramen as Muroran's "three great local foods" (むろらん3大グルメ).1
Quail eggs (室蘭うずら園) Eggs & dairy The farm's products include quail pudding made with Muroran milk (¥570 in the tourism site's listing), smoked quail eggs and quail eggs seasoned with Yayan kombu broth. They are sold at Mitara and the Higashi-Muroran Station kiosk.45
Bokoi-meshi (母恋めし) Ekiben (station lunch) Surf-clam shells filled with rice balls cooked with clam and Yayan kombu stock, with a smoked egg, smoked cheese and a mint candy. It is made by Bokoi-meshi Honpo at café Broughton in the Enrum Marina. A limited number go to Mitara, so phone ahead.20
Yayan kombu (ヤヤン昆布) Seaweed A nutritious kelp that grows only between Chikyu Misaki and Etomo Misaki. It goes into a soy-kōji seasoning endorsed by Muroran-born actor Yasuda Ken.20
Butter senbei (バターせんべい) Sweets A crisp, cookie-like biscuit from Furuya (富留屋), Muroran's oldest confectioner, founded in 1898. A cheese version is also popular.20
Tetsu no Moto cookies (鐵の素クッキー) Sweets A set of baked cookies standing in for steel's raw materials: iron ore (cocoa), limestone (soybean flour) and coal (black sesame). It is made from 100% Hokkaido wheat and comes with a booklet on local steel history.20 It is endorsed by Muroran Institute of Technology.18

Bolta (ボルタ) Craft Figures about 5 cm tall, soldered together from bolts, nuts and washers, in about 100 poses. They were created by the NPO Tetsu Pro (てつのまちぷろじぇくと). The female version is called Natty (ナッティ).471 They are sold at the Bolta workshop in Wanishi and at Mitara. The hands-on workshop is currently suspended.47
Furusato nozei (ふるさと納税) Gifts The city's page features curry ramen, yakitori, Hokkaido wagyu hamburg steaks, bread flour, quail pudding and Sōtarō. Donations can fund Muroran Institute of Technology or Hokkaido University's Muroran Marine Station. "Ranran Pay" (らんらんPay) lets visitors donate by smartphone and spend the credit at local shops.48

  • Performing arts: Muroran Kagura (室蘭神楽) comes from Niigata's Sanjō Kagura, first offered at Muroran Hachimangū in 1901. A local "Whale God Dance" (鯨神の舞) was added in the early Shōwa era. The lion dance of Kagawa-chō (御供獅子舞) was brought by Kagawa settlers in 1892. Both are city-designated folk cultural properties.32
  • Shrines: Muroran Hachimangū (室蘭八幡宮) was once nicknamed "Whale Hachiman" (鯨八幡) because it was built with money from selling a whale that washed ashore in 1874. About 300 cherry trees grow on its grounds.14 Nakajima Shrine (中嶋神社) keeps a tondenhei powder magazine from 1886 and other tondenhei relics.32
  • Museums:
    • Tonten-kan (室蘭市民俗資料館「とんてん館」) holds about 22,000 items, from Jōmon pottery to tondenhei uniforms. Admission is free.56
    • Port Literature Museum (港の文学館) honors the city's three Akutagawa Prize winners, Yagi Yoshinori, Miura Kiyohiro and Nagashima Yū.57
    • Muroran City Art Museum (室蘭市民美術館, 2008) has about 350 works.58
    • DENZAI Environmental Science Museum (DENZAI環境科学館, December 2021) has a planetarium.59
    • Old Muroran Station building (旧室蘭駅舎, 1912) is Hokkaido's oldest surviving wooden station building and a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.56

Ainu heritage

  • Pirikanoka: In Ainu, pirika noka means "beautiful form." Under this name Japan protects landscapes whose Ainu place names and the landforms behind them survive.4 Muroran's designation, the outer coast of the Etomo Peninsula (24 January 2012), covers four spots:4

    • Harukaramoi (harukar-moy, "cove where food is gathered")
    • Masuichi Beach (masuy-chise, "house of the black-tailed gulls")
    • Chikyu Misaki (poro-chikewe, "the parent cliff")
    • Tokkarisho Beach (tukar-iso, "seal rock")

    The city takes these readings from the survey Ainu Place Names of Muroran City (室蘭市のアイヌ語地名) by Chiri Mashiho and Yamada Hidezō.4

  • Etomo and Chikyu: "Etomo" comes from enrum (cape).28 "Chikyu" comes from the Ainu word for cliff, chikep. It became "Chikiu" and was later written with the characters for "Earth" (地球).3

  • More Ainu names on the coast:

    • Gin-byōbu, the "silver folding screen" cliffs, were called Chinuyepira ("cliff with carvings").60
    • Caves in the Harukaramoi cliffs are called Ahun-ru-paro ("mouth of the path that goes in"), linked with the road to the afterworld.61
    • The biggest rock at Charatsunai is Mukaruso ("axe rock").62
    • Itanki Beach was once called Hawanota, "the beach with a voice," which led to the 1986 discovery that its sand sings.41

  • Sites and memorials: A memorial to the Indigenous people (先住民慰霊碑) stands on Etomo Misaki near the excavated Enrum Chasi site. It was erected in 1962, and its Ainu-patterned face is designed to whistle in the wind.28

  • Living culture: Muroran-born embroidery artist Uetake Yasuko (上武やす子) is a transmitter of Ainu culture.1 No Ainu cultural center in the city was found in the sources consulted. For a dedicated museum, visit Upopoy in Shiraoi.

Sister & friendship cities
  • Shizuoka (静岡市), Shizuoka Prefecture: sister city since 24 December 1976. The tie was first signed with the former Shimizu City, a fellow port and industrial town, and continued after Shimizu merged into Shizuoka in 2003.88
  • Knoxville, Tennessee, USA: international sister city since 16 January 1991. Contact began when the "American Train" visited in 1988.89
  • Jōetsu (上越市), Niigata Prefecture: sister city since 22 October 1995. The link grew out of the 1990 Naoetsu–Muroran ferry, and Jōetsu, Muroran and Shimizu signed together as a "triangle" of sister cities.90
  • Miyakojima (宮古島市), Okinawa Prefecture: exchange city since 3 August 1998 (first with the former Hirara City). The two cities share the story of HMS Providence.91
